There's a knocking sound -only when the engine gets to a normal/ high temp; not when it first starts- could this be a rod knock or lost oil pressure or something? And I heard the only way to fix a rod knock is to replace the engine. (last thing I want to hear :frown: ) Any help is appreciated; thanks... ~Liz

It certainly could be rod knock. Are you seeing a flickering/on red Oil Warning light when the car is warmed up? Is it running warmer than usual?

SHOgirl:

before you dive into a rod bearing replacement, some additonal diagnosis could save you alot of work.

Can you describe more of the symptoms?
Do you have an Automatic or a stick?
What happens when the knocking noise appears after warmup? Like Chris said, do you have an oil pressure light that comes on?

If you slowly raise the rpms, does the knock go away at about 2,000 rpms? Where is the sound coming from?

How long have you had the car?

Oil pressure light doesn't come on. It's an automatic, and yeah, the knocking does seem to go away after the RPM's go up. You hear the knocking speed up with the RPM's until they slowly disipate.

it is the timing belt tensioner. Knocking is present at under 2000 rpms, goes away above that, then comes back on the way down from 2,000 right?

Take off the cross over tube and the upper timing belt cover. I would bet a hole in a donut that the belt will be as limp as a wet noodle across the cam sprockets.

Be thankful as the timing belt tensioner is easier to replace than rod bearings, but the tensioner is tougher to find than rod bearings.

Mike,

No they're not. I just got one from a member here for 130.00. I think they're plentiful, just need to know where to look. PM me if you need further info or do a search on the group buy forum.

Glad to hear its probably timing tensioner.

However if you do get a rod bearing knock...its too late.

Better be the timing tensioner!

There are a few other things to note with the rod bearing change guide, Josh is going to update the guide a little, but any ways, if you follow my guide and read through my last few posts in that part, it will clarify any misunderstandings. Unfortunaly, yes if there is a knock...... from the rod and crank, you are probably to late.

Good luck.
