A few years back I had my cats removed from my y pipe because they were bad. The exhaust place I went to told me I could install one cat and run a pipe on the other side. Someone pointed out to me that this might pose a problem for my motor since one side has less back pressure because it's catless and that I may be losing power. Any truth to this? I guess it makes since in some way.

so basically one cylinder bank has a cat while the other one doesn't? that sounds dumb...

That is correct and I never thought anything about it until someone pointed it out to me today.

just have the converter removed and replace it with a test pipe.
the "backpressure" thing is an old wives tale.

Now look what you did. Everyone is going to debate what you said haha. I always thought a car would run better without cats.

it wont really gain anything, its just a cheaper fix.
your best bet is to loose the whole stock Y for smoother flowing aftermarket unit.

Either have cats on both banks or no cats. The back pressure should at least be equal. There are a couple of aftermarket y-pipes you can install on your own.

The problem is the rear of the y pipe is welded to the rest of the exhaust so I won't be able to do it myself. As far as I am concerned they should have known better than to remove just one cat. They are a well known and respected custom exhaust place. I still can't believe I overlooked this for so long. I might just gave them build me a custom y pipe without cats.

We do offer a catless stainless setup at SHO Source. They would just need to weld on a mating ******.

I wouldn't trust them much if they managed to make that big of a mistake.

Everyone makes a mistake sometimes and I have been dealing with them for a long time and with many different vehicles and this is my first issue I ever had with them. So how much is a SHO Source catless y pipe for an ATX and is it available now or do I have to wait months until you guys get 15 prepaid orders.

Ahhh you have an ATX.... Yeah we haven't had very many orders for the ATX y-pipe. Yes you would be waiting. We do have a Walker unit.

The only problem with moving the cats past the merge is operating temperature. The cats need to be a certain distance to the engine in order to heat up and work properly. Also, if you remove the cats the car will run a tad rich.

IMO, I wouldn't have them build anything for me. They obviously are clueless as to what they're doing. Was this Lou's?

FYI, it's illegal for ANY licensed repair facility to remove cats, render them inoperable, etc. They can't be that popular, or someone would've blown the whistle by now.

it isn't exactly a change in back pressure but a difference in exhaust gas velocity. It if was me I'd run cats on both, no cats, or relocate to one large cat after the y pipe

Just because one guy working there made a mistake doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing. I actually talked to them today and the owner told me he wouldn't have let my car leave his shop that way and offered to install a cat with free labor.
