After reading about the new Fusion-based Hybrid pursuit vehicle, the article I read mentioned "skid plates" for going over curbs.

Is the under-body engine cover (or whatever the heck you call it) any different on the Police Interceptor?

Or is it still just a big piece of plastic that I can hear flopping in the breeze when I hit a bump? :)

The "Cover" on the PI is actually a steel skid plate to protect the oil pan on those off road excursions the police do with their cars.
It isn't very big front to back but very solid
There are full length skid plates available in the up fitting marketplace.

Where's the up fitting marketplace?

The official up fitting facility is 3-4 blocks East of the Chicago Assembly Plant (CAP) and it is called TDM.

I've taken a tour of the facility a few years back, cool place.

Even with my credentials, and having pulled some strings with the Government Liason Coordinator..... I managed two pictures before being told "Nah uh uh.... no no no". Lol.

But I understood and complied. I was very thankful for having been allowed to go there and tour the entire up fitting facility up close and personal.

They have (or had at that time) four separate assembly lines for up fitting, and each line would be an added tier of options built upon the previous line, with line #1 being the very basic of options to start out. Line #4 was the creme de la creme of everything and anything available.

I was surprised how many municipalities were NOT ordering the ballistic panels, but when it was explained, that each panel added approximately 40-50lbs PER DOOR, that most towns were looking at the "bottom line" as far fueling costs and lugging around another 200lbs (assuming each door was paneled with the ballistic shielding) that most Mayor's &/or Town President's did not care for that, so a I saw a lot of those panels sitting stacked neatly unused in their shipping crates.

Crazy analogy I tell ya. When people in my line of work, and their safety therein, is relegated to how much it costs to fuel a squad on any given day. Meh, such is life.

The Government Liason Coordinator I knew there, suffered a cardiac event couple of years back, and from what I understand, is now retired. Not sure who his replacement is.

Thank your wife and her coworkers for all the little added safety measures they implement for those in my profession.

Truly appreciated in more ways than either she, or her coworkers can, or ever would know.

I was looking at some other stuff in fordparts.com and came across the ballistic shielding for the doors - > $4K each. Might be another reason for not wanting it besides fuel ;)

Found this aftermarket: Setina Ford Interceptor Sedan Skid Plate - http://www.majorpolicesupply.com/ford-interceptor-sedan-skid-plate.html

Also found this, but not sure if that's really shields or something else:

7E063A/B/C - was for Ford Taurus 2016 - search keyword "Auto Trans Support Plate"

Search "door armor panel" at fordparts.com - LOL

$3k for "regular" (I guess), $4k for "Lvl IV"
