Plug Wires

My ATX SHO has 137K on the original wire set. Runs bad a mid throttle, tech says it needs wires.
What's the best deal? I was told MSD had a set that worked but I can't find a listing. I was also told to use a five speed wire set, as they were considerably less expensive, and worked fine.

Yes, you the wire set for a MTX SHO (thats a five speed). The cheapest I know of is FordPartsNetwork. Follow the link on our homepage and I think the forum gets a portion of the profit. But, they sell them at the best discount - but you will be paying a bit over $100 for a set. Most change them at 60k, some every 100k but you are overdue. Before you change them you might want to look into a new set of plugs which FPN also has cheap. Along with that your plug wells prolly have a lot of oil in them so you will need to get new valve cover gaskets from autozone (you will need to order them for a 91 SHO , they are the same set but not listed for any other year). So, if you have 137k on your original plugs and wires and get those taken care of along with clean plug wells you will notice a very drastic difference in performance. Make sure you do not allow the oil to drain into the chamber but that you clean it all out before you pull the spark plug out. Hope this helps,

Get the AC Delco wires from midwestsho.com or rockauto.com... they're only like $50 and work great (I have been running mine for 8,000 miles with no issues).

I agree. The AC/Delco set is awesome for under $50.

I like the RED Taylor wires for about $70 from Summit Racing. They are also available in BLUE.

The AC Delcos and Taylors are both as good as stock for half the price. Can't beat that.

Edit: You're going to want to do plugs at the same time. It's also a great idea to change the valve cover gaskets if they are leaking oil into the plug wells; otherwise you'll foul your new wires and plugs in short order.

Thanks, everyone. We did the valve cover gaskets with the valve adjustment about 20,000 miles ago. Probably will screw in another set of plugs, though.

My tech, a fellow SHO owner, was quite surprised and impressed by these wires. They are absolutely 100% correct in length and ends. They carry a lifetime warranty for about 1/3rd the cost of Motorcraft units. He couldn't believe that they were made by AC Delco.
The part number for a ATX set is 16-826Q.

About the time I bought my SHO, my son bought a Nissan Maxima, V6- 5 Speed. Both cars had virtually the same mileage on them when we bought them in 1997. Since that time, I have put over $5000.00 in repairs, not counting normal maintenance and valve adjustments. His expense has been a total of one clutch, and a brake service, about $1500.00 total. I don't know how the Maxima would do against a MTX SHO, but the car is reasonably fast.
Most of the problems on my SHO have not been engine related, but the POS Ford stuff it's hooked to. I don't know what the answer is, but I definitely know this will be my last SHO.
