Hey people! Well, I'm back in SHO Bussiness:woo-hoo:! I have to let my SRT4 go so I'm getting the SHO ready for duty. My bro has had it for about 3 years and it's been sitting for a good 10-12 months. Gets started every few weeks but the water pump blew and he bought a Diesel VW (he drives a TON). I know I'm doing the water pump and CPS. I pay $35 per hour labor here at work (Toyota/Ford Dealer) but what I don't know is if I should pay for a valve adjustment. I've done quite a bit of work on the SHO myself including the valve covers. How hard is the valve adjustment. The last time it was done was at least 140K miles ago, so it NEEDS to be done.

Also, the last time I drove the car, it was way down on power. Could a CPS cause that?

I'm happy to be back and can't wait to get to know everybody again:wave:!

:thankyou:

water pump and crank sensor are easy, if not time consuming. if you can pull the valve covers, you can change those two components. may as well replace the timing belt while you're in there and complete the front 60k. as far as adjusting the valve lash, once the valve covers are out of the way, it's as easy as checking the gap, using the right tools to depress the bucket and putting the right sized shim in. sounds more complicated than it really is, and there's plenty of places you can rent a shim kit.

Great! I'll probably end up doing the valves myself then.

What would cause that loss of power and make it idle rough? I'd like to start trouble shooting. The guys in service are kinda useless past the water pump and CPS.

Thanks a TON!:omgsho:

Pull codes?

Oil in the plug wells?

How old are the intake gaskets/plugs/wires?

Sense you are doing the shims, might as well do a full upper 60k on it. That should help with the performance/idling issue.

Do the KOEO and KOER tests to see if you have any code related problems. Do a front 60K. Do a top 60K. It is super easy to check the valve clearance. It's a little more involved if you find one out of spec and have to replace the shim to bring it into spec. Not difficult, but it requires the two special tools.

I know the valves will be out of spec (130K miles overdue) so I'm renting all the tools.

All the valve cover gaskets, plugs, and wires have been replaced. I'm hoping it's nothing serious. The car has never been overheated or anything.

I'm thinking I'll be tracking down a bad sensor..........

Ok, it seems everyone has a problem working on my SHO and I'm getting highly irritated. I am willing to pay good money and STILL I get techs WHINING and acting like they are doing me a HUGE favor!!:madflame:

How hard is it to do the water pump and CPS?? What tools would I need? Does it need to be on a lift??

I have done the valve cover gaskets on my SHO and brakes. I just don't know how much harder it would be to do the other stuff.

It does not need to go on a lift to do wp or cps. you need to pull off the accessory belt(s), the timing belt covers, the crank damper pulley, and the timing belt. This is detailed very well on shophoenixproject. If you can do brakes and valve cover gaskets, you can do this.

As long as you can take your time, I would say do the work yourself. I had never done it before....I ordered the 60K video from SHonutperformance.com and also used the guide at shopheonixprodject.com. (sp?). No real special tools needed. Just the valve adjustment tools and a dampner puller which is cheap at any parts store.
