I am installing my hasting piston rings and have a question. Should you put oil on the rings and the cylinder walls when you install them? It does not say in the directions and I have heard that some rings should be installed dry for proper break in. Wondering what others have done. Thanks

Ive installed 2 sets of hastings so far.

The walls has to be beyond clean , and to help do the job as a racing shop told me to do is to clean the walls (very well) with WD40 and wipe it down with those blue shop wipes (similar to Bounty).

Then I installed them oil-less. But once everything was in place , I dropped a tiny bit of oil in each cyl.

I dont know if this IS the by-the-book way , but that what I did and the 2002 sho is so far so good.

I wipe the cylinder wall w/ a little STP. the rings can go in w/ some oil or dry, that part shouldn't matter.

Thanks. I appreciate it. This is my first engine and I want to make sure I get it right.

per the Helms manual, page 03-01B-53:

apply a light coat of engine assembly lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford spces ...........on the pistons, piston rings, piston pins.......and cylinder bore.

as usual, your method may vary.

A lot of builders will dip the pistons w/ rings into bucket of fresh oil. I **** the walls as well as the piston and rings with oil or piston ring assembly ****.

I've never had an issue with any motor I've every built. They're going to get oil on them and anyway, as well as they'll 'drip dry' the majority of it before the motor starts. Running the pistsons up and down the cylinder walls while turning the motor to make sure there are no issues will also deposit the oil onto the walls.

FWIW, I used this on my rings and cylinder walls (Royal Purple assembly on bearings) when I put my SHO motor together. It is pretty thin, so it won't stay and completely fill the voids in the piston.
