I am new to the Taurus and the Sho, I have read that part of the PP, performance package, that the final drive ratio goes from 2.77, non PP, to 3.16 on the sho's w/the performance package, along w/other goodies.
I am looking at a '13 Taurus PI, ecoboost, w/5,100.00 worth of options added on to the base vehicle and one of the add on's is 3.16 final drive ratio. Was ordered for a well to do PD in an upscale community, any thoughts ?

Depends on price, mileage, and hours operated. If it's a full time cop on the streets that is alot of city miles and idling time. I would be inclined to pass on it unless service intervals were available and price reflected the run time. Even so, these can be costly to maintain. You have to look beyond the purchase price

It's the idling time that can be problematic. With how involved changing the water pump is on these cars I would be leery. I've had a couple Crown Vic Interceptors and water pumps, cooling fans, and cats tended to be needed sooner than the non Interceptors.

Exactly. these things can idle for hours every day and that will wear out a bunch of items. The thing should be deeply discounted to reflect this. meanwhile you should budget in expensive repairs from the jump as things will need to be addressed/repaired much sooner than a normal used car at the same mileage.

I realize the chance a person takes in buying a ex squad, have had a few over the years and have had good luck w/the ones I had. I am not going into this blind. All the creature comforts of an sho are great but I can get into this ecoboost w/71,000 miles for under 8,000, out the door. It will not be a Sho, but it will be half the price of a '13 Sho, insurance will be cheaper and I can make it my own. Just throwing things around and trying to make a decision.

Posted in the other thread. Coin flip.
This is a much more problematic engine and drivetrain design than the older PI stuff. That is why my local PD bought a batch and quickly went away from the Ford's to other domestic models for PD use. The maintenance costs and failure rate for powertrain components for these cars made them pivot away fast. Almost all of them are out of the local fleet already.

8k+ and another for 1k for miscellaneous stuff.

Lose a trans add another 6k. I was quoted $5800 from Ford.

Lose a PTU add another $1900

Lose a water pump add another $2000

That puts you in a real 13+ SHO that has a better chance of not being completely beaten to death.

A 65 year old lady purchased my 13 SHO and in 5 years put 54K miles on it. I bought it completely stock for $20,900. I added a tune, plugs, and K&N drop in. I put 16K on it in 9 months with various tunes, lots of freeway driving, lots of sitting in traffic driving, 3 dyno sessions, and made 20 track passes. I was on the freeway messing with new paper plated 392 Hemi SRT 8 and I lost my trans.....

A simple snap ring (it is a common failure in the our transmissons) that holds the 3-5-R drum together, failed and grenaded my trans. If cost me $4900 for a reman trans (with warranty) and labor, and I was hooked up.

These cars are an investment, I know of a certain moderator that wants one, but cant pull the trigger. Yet........

Is that snap ring something the shift kit improves?

No it is not. Once it fails, you are done. It is only a matter of when. It is a pretty common failure.

Do the other gears still work to limp it around? I have a used tranmission from a 16’ in my garage that i have planned to take to my performance shop. They are best with trannys and custom tranny work. See what they can do to improve on it. But a snap ring is a snap ring. Maybe i can get an inconel snap ring made

If you have a extra one laying and they are willing to do some R&D then perfect. I documented my whole trans experience in my Couple of Goals thread. I would always have 1& 2 second gear, and then I would intermittently have the rest of the forward gears. I never regained reverse at any time.

If they can get the snap ring to stay, then it would fix alot of problems.

I was looking for a way to control the paddles more quickly and hold gears and have no downshift limits also. Or just swap to a manual but thats alot of work to the car
