Next month I have on the agenda to finally address some issues to get this car fixed up. I'd previously posted and got some advice and decided that I won't be doing a front 60k since the water pump is new.

Basically with the help of a mechanic and a good shop with a lift and air tools, I am going to fix my top end tapping noise whatever it is. I think I need a shim kit in case I need to replace any out of spec. I plan to buy the following:

1. Valve cover gasket set
2. Intake gasket set (for the **** of it, they are probably original and the mechanic insists I get these)
3. New plug wire set
4. Plugs (possibly...the PO replaced these, they still look ok)
5. Clevite Std. rod bearings (going to do those as well)
6. Valvoline MaxLife ATF 4 qts. (going to replace the tranny fluid this weekend; got rained out last weekend)
7. Any additional part that may be required to fix the noise (i.e. chain tensioners, etc.)

Anything else I need while I'm in these areas? I did notice while I had my car up on jack stands last weekend that all of that black sludgy stuff was kinda wet around the tranny; almost like it was fresh. I got it all over my hands and smelled it. It's definitely not motor oil. I wonder if it's possible that I'm leaking tranny fluid somehow??? I it was dirty and I couldn't tell if it was red. Do the power steering lines go anywhere near the tranny or front of the tranny? There's a tranny cooler or oil cooler up there too that's got sludge on it. I thought it was from an old leak that never got cleaned up, but maybe I have something new. I haven't noticed spots on the pavement other than where I leaked p/s fluid once on the pass. side behind the front wheel. What else could be leaking there? The tranny is supposedly sealed. Maybe I'm slinging fluid from something else. Could it be axle related--dumb ? but is there anything that could leak fluid from those? I do have that rumbling card in spokes noise coming from the floorboard. You can feel the vibration in the pedal when you let off the gas. It only does it while the car is in motion and coasting, so I'm thinking I have an axle or wheel issue as well.

I topped off the p/s fluid with Prestone stuff that had stop leak in it, and it seems to be holding fine and the steering isn't as bad or noisy. No more leaks from behind the pass. wheel either.

After this is done...new headlights and paint.
