Parking brake doesn't release automatically anymore.

When I first got the car (~8 months ago), I noticed that if I had the parking brake on and shifted to Drive (but not Reverse), it would release itself. I thought it was strange that it would only do this in Drive and not Reverse.

Now it won't even do it in Drive. (so now I wonder if 'should have' always worked in Reverse too???). Anyway, anyone know why this feature would stop working?

It is a vacuum-actuated release. When the shifter moves out of Park, it is supposed to release the brake. I'd venture to say you either have a hole or rip in one of the vacuum hoses, or the hose got disconnected somewhere. To check out the hose at the shifter, you have to remove the console (a fairly straightforward procedure). To check the other end, just look up under the dash near the parking brake pedal and look for some vacuum lines.

If you need help taking the console out, just ask. I've done it many a time on various MTX and ATX SHO's, so I've run into just about every problem that can happen (knock on wood for next time  )

Mine 95 only releases in drive and I'm pretty sure that's how it supposed to be.

Honestly, couldn't tell ya that  I never used the parking brake in the ATX. I'd say listen to Jason, since his car is perfect in every way (other than the whole ATX thing wink ), and I'm guessing if it only releases in drive, that's the way it's supposed to be.

Unfortunately, no. I had a SLO LX before and I miss my automatic parking brake, but the SHO has its other rewards. On the automatics, it's only supposed to release in a Forward gear. Got used to doing the Park-Drive-Reverse shift for years in the SLO for just that reason.
