So I bought this '91 SHO current red from some old lady I saw driving around town. The clear coat is peeling off, and there is no hope in saving this paint job.
I have always believed in painting a car the color it came from the factory, but this SHO has all black leather interior... And honestly, I think painting it black will just be sick.
Would it be completely stupid to strip it down and paint it black, making it a phony B on B SHO?
I value you guys' opinions.

I don't see why not. The previous owner of my car painted mine. It was the stock blue green color and now its a more solid green. I like it a lot. Now just to get the interior to be more fitting, IE not grey lol. I say if you have the skills or the cash do it.

I would leave the colour as is, mostly because I like that colour and I think it might be the single stage paint.

Black is great too, would it be possible to do a plasti-dip job, or would you just go for the authentic paint.

Paint it any color you choose. It's YOUR car. Now if it was a rare combination stock, that might be different.

My '89 SHO has the one stage paint in great condition, but this one has the two-stage with clear-coat. It I was to paint it, I would get a good paint job, not a cheap quicky.

If it is not the single stage red, then black it is. The extra work is not that much as it does not have to be great on the inside of the doors, trunk lid, and hood.

I am willing to bet that what you have now is single-stage red with a clear over it from a later time.

I would not paint it a different color - to make it look right, you need to disassemble the car to get the fenders, doors, door jambs, pillars, and such correct. That doubles your cost. So, instead of a $3000 paint job, you are looking at $6k.

I would keep it the factory color. Red with a black interior is a very nice combination. It may be sort of rare, though I'm not sure about that; most red ones I've seen had gray interiors.
