P2111, P2135 (MKS,SHO) TPS - Throttle Position Sensor

So on the way to work standing at a intersection I got the little wrench icon. The car went into idle only mode, but I was able to crawl to a parking lot in shame. Had my scanner on me I was able to get the following two codes (P2111, and P2135). Restarted the car and issue went away and DTC disappeared. Previously I would get the wrench icon once every few weeks under hard acceleration for second or two but never any issue. I thought it might be the AWD but I guessed wrong. Easy to swap…about $60 from rock auto. As you see moisture got in and it got rusted inside. Two torx bolts hold in place, new ones are included in the package. Makes sure to unplug both electrical connectors. After your done let the car idle so the RPM adjust. Hope this helps somebody out.

Strange! Wonder if someone was into powerwashing the engine compartment. First case of TPS replacement Hope you put some dielectric grease in with the new sensor (at the electrical connector and at the arm) after cleanup to help prevent recurrence.

For sure. Dielectric on everything. Dealer try to tell me I need to buy the complete throttle body for $400. Lol

Yeah, luckily Ford does make the potentiometers available for the throttle bodies. They are just not widely advertised!

I got codes P2111 and P2112 this morning. I did not get the TPS code though. Do you guys think this is still TPS or did my throttle body go out?

Welp, it was not the throttle Position Sensor. I'm going to pull a 4.0L explorer TB from a salvage yard since they are supposedly a larger bore and Ford wants $240 for the SHO one.

You might want to talk to Torrie before you do that. The ECU really counts on having an accurate TB model for airmass feed forward, boost control, starting, etc. I don't really know all the implications but there's at least a potential for some major headaches with the tune. Here's some of the relevant tables I found at a glance that would need changing:

Been running a salvage yard TB off a 2009 4.0L Explorer. They are the same bore size as our TB. I took my TB apart to see why it was causing the code. All the parts looked intact. But, the actuator bearing was binding quite a bit. I soaked it in penetrant then bathed it in a lubricant. It is moving much more freely now. I'll reinstall and see if the issue is fixed.

Worked. cleaned and lubed the actuator bearing and the metal dowels that rest in the plastic body with a silicone-based lubricant. Looks like graphite was used originally but I bet originally they didn't think water was going to be getting in there. I'm hoping to displace the future water and stop corrosion.

Oh, and the previous owner had installed one of those EconAid spacer things. I threw that away.
