P/S cooler= radiator.

i was reading apost from awhile back, and Dale brought this idea up...

could this work?

I know that i will have to put a bit more fluid in as well.

i guess what im getting at is, will the P/S pump be able to push fluid all the way throught the radiator?

my p/s cooler owed my starter money, see.... and the cooler didnt have it, so the starter beat the living s*** out of him....

For one, i dont have another stock cooler.
two, the guy just dropped of my tranny, and im going to go pick up my clutch disc.
three, this seems easier...

and i cannot find a small enough cooler, other than ordering one...
any suggestions on running the p/s lines to the radiator?

this was my thought exactly....you beat me to the punch.

Assuming you have replaced your radiator with a newer one, it likely has the provision for the fluid to fluid cooler for an ATX SHO. This would be perfect to cool the PS fluid, and would probably do a better job than the stock fluid to air cooler...

thats what i was thinking... allthough the fluid to air is simplier....

and there is not alot of room in there....... but i will give it a shot...

radiator is new.

edit: with coolant temps of around 190-200, is that going to cool the ps fluid enough?? or will it not have the full effect of coolant temp? (allthough heat sink would play a big part)

I wouldn't worry about it. I think the PS system needs a filter more than a cooler anyway. if the cradle is out, just cut the return line at the rack before it U-bends and run a line up the reservoir. can't be easier than that.

I had to do something similar thing on my car, except I just moved the stock cooler to the pass. side of the car....with a little inline filter. you can always put a cooler back in later anyway.

I don't know how hot the p/s fluid typically gets, but using the radiator to "cool" the p/s fluid may actually keep the fluid hotter than it would be otherwise. The radiator will keep the p/s fluid at about the same temperature as the coolant, whereas the little air cooler may keep it closer to the ambient air temperature (plus whatever delta).

I've never tried this, but you might try checking the temperature of the little p/s cooler after driving a bit to see what sorts of temperatures it sees. If I think of this in the next few weeks I might try it with my IR thermometer just to see what it's doing.

on track, ive seen stock power steering systems overheat(boil over), therefore, i wouldnt recommend using the radiator end tank for P/S cooling. the stock cooler is fine for daily drivers. you can always add a B&M stack cooler or equivalant if you feel the stock cooler isnt cutting it for you. though i would not mount it in the same location as stock. aint no betta place than right out there in front (of the condensor).

thats what i was worried about the most...the coolant being to hot for the PS fluid... which im pretty sure that the ps fluid isnt close to 200...

now all i have to do is find a cooler....
going to see if i can use anything at school that we have laying around... i know we have something around there...

The internal radiator tranny cooler is on the "COLD" side of the radiator and seldom would it be too hot for the PS.

The GEN 3 has a wimpy tranny cooler but a very good PS cooler. I've never seen mine over 150F and that was last year at ThunderHill. Plenty of Gen 3 PS coolers around I'm sure as the are taruii generic.

I didnt know that it was only on the endtank... i thought it ran through the radiator as well... :nut: allthough i dont know were it would go, there is hardley any room..

if i cant find anything at school tomorrow, i will head on over to the JY and pull a GIII cooler. do you know what they go for, off the top of your head?

The GEN 3 PS cooler is a straight finned tube with 1/2" ends. Have know idea what they want for them but they don't usually list them when parting GEN 3 SHOs cars. Probably some on eBay.
