Oxygen Sensor

Are both oxygen sensors the same part number? Just would like to know before I go to the store and the imbecile behind the counter sells me the wrong parts.

Hey, I just replaced mine yesterday. The cheapest I found them was at Autozone for $40.99 and the part number is 15716. Both use that same part number and if I were you, I'd get their loaner tool, it will help you out a lot. You WILL need it to take off the rear sensor if you have an automatic. I had mine on a lift which made it much easier and I mean, much easier. Many people say that they take the rear sensor loose from the top but I was able to get mine from the bottom. You will need to unplug it from the top though. If you haven't already, do a search on "oxygen sensors" to find out how others got theirs off. My car is a generation 2, generation 1 may take different sensors but to be sure do a search.

The sensor depends on your engine, but they both use 8.5" leads. Please try the search function. You caould have found this same info without even typing a question.

I think the "search" is a useful tool...and you should look and see what it has to offer....however, with 3000+ members at this board, I'm sure there is more to be learned from personal experience than has already been said.
Don't stop asking questions..just because a few people are fed up with the same old questions, this is not the general attitude at all./
I have heard these questions here and in person for over 12 1/2 years, and I never mind at all saying the "same old thing"...I simply love SHOtalk
If someone doesn't want to talk SHOtalk, then they need to read and not talk.

Your right, Snow. I love the search but it also helps to talk to people about it. There was a lot of posts on oxygen sensors and Scott replyed to most of them in the past so I can see why he refers people to the search function.

MillerSHO's member # is just higher than 3000...and mine is #50 and Scott's is #51, so I've been hearing it a little longer and have no problem whatsoever in hearing it a lot longer......rave on , ask any and all , and as long is there is one SHOquestion out there if I don't know the answer I sure will ask someone. .anyone, til the SHOs lose their last breath, and I hope I am dead long before then. squint .

You should be very careful with that attitude.

I have helped many, but the main purpose of that response was to help other SHO owners help themselves. If you try the search function on that exact question, you would have found that it had been answered many times before and several times just recently. You have just earned my silence.

Everyone calm down! I DID use the search function, got a ton of answers, but either did not see or missed (as I did not look at all of the multitude of responses the search gave me) if BOTH sensors were the same (autozone gave me 2 different part numbers).
Scott-sorry to have wasted your time, but thanks for responding anyway. (hope you are still going to respond to my posts!)

Snowwind 1990-my check engine light has been coming on intermittently, so I had the car scanned at the garage and the code for the sensors came up (plus I have 112,*** miles on the originals, but wanted to change now instead of waiting for the 60,000)

If the 02 sensores are the problem you will be suprised at how much better your car will run with new ones.

Also the MPG will increase.
I just changed mine.

You haven't mentioned whether your car is an ATX or MTX. Replacing the O2 sensors on the MTX is not only cheaper, it's also much easier. To replace the rear sensor on the ATX you will need an O2 sensor socket (borrow from an auto parts store), a universal joint and about 6"-9" of extensions. To reach the electrical connector, you may find it easier to lay on top of the intake and reach behind the engine down by the firewall to access the connector from the top. You will probably notice a nice improvement in driveability and fuel mileage with the new sensors. Good luck.

with your codes, did it come up as both front and rear? If so, the problem does not lie in the sensors, but something else. If only one 1 sensor comes up in the codes, that usually says the sensor is faulty. As for an MTX removal, 22mm open ended wrench works wonders. Make sure you use anti-seize when reinstalling the sensors also!

My car is an ATX. I got the info on how to do the change from the search function. I will get the tool from autozone (it is only 15 dollar deposit). The scan code only indicated one sensor bad, but as I am only 8,000 mile away from my 60,000 maintenance, I thought I would just change both now and save that much work from the maintenance. Thanks for all the help.

Millersho...did that comment really need to be made? Scott has always helped out those in need...always. He suggested the search function because often times answers are immediate rather than having to wait on someone to reply.

I persoanlly would not want to lose Scott's input. He has an immense amount of knowledge to share. There isn't much on the SHO that he hasn't done or better said by Scott himself.... there is probably not a bolt in his car that he hasn't fondled.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions, however when you see the same question asked over and over and over again...well, you get the idea I hope.

Andy- I'm going to have a go at it tommorow (sunday, september 29). I have the sensors, the sensor socket, some cold pop, and some good tunes. Let me know if you want to come up (if you are not busy with other plans wink )

I changed them on my ATX three days ago.
I did not have the 02 socket.
I was lucky enough to slip a 22mm open wrench and the 02 sensor was in just the right position to get a 1/4 turn. From there I took it out with my fingers.

It was however more difficult to snug the new bosch 02 in. They are much thicker and that left less room to finagle.

Next time I will get the 02 socket.

It only took 20min total time.
(not including car cool down)
