Well as I was driving home from college today, the temp gauge was pegged at the N in normal when it usually runs at the L. There was coolant spewing from the Throttle body lines but I couldn't really see anything else. I am thinking it is the thermostat because I have recently replaced the radiator, water pump and hoses. Anyone have anything to say about this. I need to have this fixed by Sun. night to go back to college.

P.S. The car was only at N for a minute or two, would any damage occur to the car in this short period of time? I pulled over before it could go any higher.

As long as the gauge never got above the NORMAL range, your engine should be undamaged. If you got the needle op to the H mark keep you eyes open and your fingers crossed.

You wrote that coolant was spewing from the throttle body hoses, but you think the thermostat is the problem? Why? It sounds like your coolant level was so low that there was not enough to keep the engine properly cooled. Replace the damaged hose, refill the radiator and test the system out. If it still runs hot, then start thinking about the thermostat.

Well scott,
I never let it get into the H, just N in normal. I had plenty of coolant but forgot to say i reattached the line and it was not damaged but still overheating with new fluid added. Like I said before, I have replaced the radiator, hoses and water pump. I have not done the thermostat and don't know when it had been done before. That is why I thought it could be the thermostat. Could it possibly be the temp sending unit also?

Let me know soon.

Well...
Seems like a lot of us are having problems! I have the same problem, but no "spewing". Sounds like you may have simply overfilled your reservoir. Maybe an airbubble? I dunno... But I feel your pain. My car goes into the shop Monday. I also replaced my radiator last week. Hmmmmmmmmmm, sounds fishy that both of us have the same problems. Check to see if you sill get heat. If that's the case, it is more than likely NOT your thermostat. That's why I don't think mine is the thermo. My engine actually seems to be running pretty cool. The fans are on, just about all the time now and the air that the fans kick up is very cool, so you may not be damaging your engine at all, your temperature sending unit may just be giving false readings or the guage may be shot. I too am a college kid, so I don't have the time, nor the resources to putter around for trial and error OR to run codes. If you're still SOL (**** OUTTA LUCK) come monday and I figure out what's wrong, I'll let you know. Until then, keep ME posted too! Thanks

I just replaced the thermostat and the temp switch and it still overheats. It feels like there is no fluid in the upper radiator hose. But when I turn on the heater on, it goes drastically down, like from almost overheating to the M in Normal. Anybody have any ideas? I need to get this fixed quick as I have to be at college tomorrow and currently have no transportation.

P.S. For reference, which way does the thermostat go into the housing? With the spring away from the engine or towards it?

Did you replace the lower radiator hose? It may be collapsing and preventing coolant from moving from the radiator to the engine. Since the heater brings the temperature down, you must have coolant on the engine, and the pump must be working. Also, if you do the T-stat, pull the block plugs out to drain the block.

http://www.shotimes.com. That site has info on installing a thermostat with pics. I believe the jiggly valves need to be aligned at 12:00.

Maybe water pump? Mine goes into the shop tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed for both you and I. G'luck with school too.

I fixed the problem. It was a combination of things. The thermostat was shot as well as a few coolant hoses and the temp switch. I found that I had forgotten to tighten a little heater hose after everything so that was what was causing me to overheat after replacing the thermostat. Simple stuff is always the hardest.
I hope that you get it fixed Erik, mine was simple but time consuming. You save tons of $$$ if you do it yourself.

Thanks for everyone's help.
