so a local speed shop called Lane Automotive is having their annual car show over memorial day weekend. they're kicking things off with an open header cruise friday night, and i'm thinking about entering the wife's 98 in it. anything i should be concerned about running open headers on the car for 5 miles besides a ****** A/F ratio from no O2 sensors?

Hmmm, well others will have input, but I have ran my car for up to a week before with open headers and no problems arised. The sound is pretty awesome coming from out cars.

Why not pop it after the y-pipe and leave the O2s on? Shouldn't affect it, other than sounding better from the curb than in the car.

Probably not a great idea, no exhaust can burn the exhaust valves...not to mention O2s won't read properly. Idle and part throttle quality may degrade as well.

guess i could just dump it after the y-pipe...was gonna take the opportunity to gut the cats anyway, since i think one's clogged.

Just unhook the Y pipe from the rest of the exhaust. With cats on, I doubt you will burn the valves as if you were running just an open exhaust dumping under the car.

The noise in the car will drive him batty before anything gets hurt (and I don't think anything would).

Back when I was toying with my '99 and trying stuff, I had the mufflers removed and straight pipes out to the tips.

Lasted about 3 days. I think I permanenetly damaged my hearing after a few days.

Went back and had turbos welded in.

open manifold is a bit no no. you will be pumping a insane amount of heat into your engine bay. the rear manifold will be heating your rack and your transmissions don't do it. open Y-pipe will be plenty loud for everyone to know you have a bit nasty V8 under the hood (even though it is not a big nasty V8)

yeah, my 98's had stock piping running back to a pair of tips with no mufflers for years. i can't imagine it'll be too much louder with the cat-back unbolted from the y-pipe. maybe i'll crawl under it tonight and break it loose.

yeah cut it after the y, running open manifolds on a car not built to run like that can burn the valves.

Removing your 02s along with piping = Bad
Removing piping with 02s intact = Ugly loud, more exhaust fumes into cabin (keep windows open) and frequent urges to urinate from bladder vibration.

Have you guys even stepped out of your car with just the y-pipe? It sounds pretty damn good IMHO. With or w/o cats (sounds pretty much the same either way, just a little louder without cats)

Yep.

The V8 SHO in that state sounds as bad as any Detroit mild-cam V8 with no exhaust. An old Buick station wagon sounds the same.

Now, put in serious cams, and the noise sounds better.......
