Just got a 91 SHO and was driving from indy to chicago. I shifted down to 4th and heard a grinding noise, put it back in 5th and continued on. When I finally stopped only 5th would work. All other gears make a loud grinding sound, Even if I take my foot off the clutch in neutral it grinds and will **** the engine. I can put the car into all the other gears but when I start to release clutch the car starts to move and there is the very loud grinding. 5th gear works fine no problem. Ended up nursing it to chicago in 5th, driving an hour like this. Don't know what to do. Need to drive home monday. It seems to me like it must be the tranny. The shifter feels no different than before, can go through all gears until I release clutch. I Need Help. Anyone know where to get work done cheap in Indy?

Do you have a rod or cable shifter? Have you looked under the car at the linkage? What type of fluid is in the trans? Any leaks? Can you shift it throught the gears with the engine off?

sorry to hear that. i dont know much about trannys but i would say that one is toast? i would check fluids and pull up the center like board thing underneath the shifter and make sure all that linkage is good. otherwise just rev it up and dump it into 5th;) haha good luck

It is an early 91 with cable shifter. It was having trouble getting into first but nothing major, I think the cable might be streched a little, but I don't think that's my problem. It will go through all gears with engine off or with engine on With foot on clutch. As for fluid I don't know because I bought the car three days ago. No leaks as of yesterday, I am about to go down there and check it out again.
