After finding what I thought was the problem yesterday I went out today, intending to go to lunch and it started again no more than 500 feet down the road. I parked in a turning lane and put the car in park then turned the engine off, it's still doing it. I turn the key on, just to the on position, not cranking, and the car cranks and starts up. So whatever is doing is keeping it hot. I'm going out right now to fix it if I can be fixed. If it can't I could really use suggestions as to what it could be that would keep it hot like that.

Looking at your pictures in your other thread (which BTW, in the future please try to keep the same problem in a single thread), I can't see the S-terminal connection. I would still suspect that the connection is intermittently shorting to the hot side of the solenoid.

Can you pop the starter out, remove the silly red cap from the solenoid, and take some close-up shots of the 3 solenoid connections?

It still may be a bad starter, and since this one has been grinding on the ring gear while running it may be worth just bringing it back for another, but I'd still want to see the connections clearly before you reinstall either the current starter or a new one.

Sorry, I just make new threads because from my experience people totally ignore a thread that has been deemed 'solved' in it's last post, they don't bother to see what's wrong again unless another thread is posted. But I'll try and maybe change the title so it'll get more attention, sorry. Incase you meant the thread in the engine part I'm sorry about that as well, I just posted it in haste before I went out and worked on the car, then thought it would be better to put it in the emergency forum since it is indeed something dire. Sorry again, all of this just has me frazzled.

As for the terminals I have everything hooked up properly, I've even loosened the cables, turned them and tightened them back down so there was no way they'd be touching. And I checked the S-terminal connection is clear of everything, if it's jumping to another terminal it has to be arcing through the air. I checked the positive cables for any other signs of wear, tear or abrasions and I got nothing. So if it happens now it's not something I did or the car has done, it has to be the starter or if there's something before the starter in the electrical system that can do it, it could very well be that. But again if this happens again it can't be the cables so I'll just replace the starter with a new one, thankfully this one has a free replacement warranty encase of a manufacturing fault.

If you're sure that everything is hooked up correctly then yeah it's probably just as well to exchange this starter for another. Obviously if the problem persists then you've got a wiring problem somewhere, but like I said since this starter has been grinding on the ring gear with the engine running I personally wouldn't hesitate to exchange it out.

I'm going out again, if it happens again I have the ramps and all the tools I need the trunk, if Advance Auto wants to be a pain and want the starter right then and there I can give em the starter if needed. Thanks for all the help again, guess I was just unlucky.

Well I just made a ten mile round trip and nothing seemed to happen, I'm not saying it's fixed, I'm not going to jinx it. But things seem to be functioning better than before. *knock on wood* Now I have to go before my car hears me :theyareontome:
