I'm going with the numbers... 36-51 lbs, then 62-69 lbs. I have a copy of the pattern, just wanted to double check the numbers.

Also... it says in the haynes to lightly oil the bolts. Don't I have to adjust those numbers 1/3 for that? Or are they taking that into account? I'm going to lay them up there, and get a few pics up. Hopefully someone can tell me what they do when they replace their heads. :salute:

Ok.. now my next question.. which side of these head gaskets is up? I didnt see any writing on it anywhere. And only noticed one small difference.

One side...

The flip side....

Just curious which side is the 'top' first set of pics or second? Thanks!

Intake and exhaust side of the front head.. other still in the bag..

The gaskets will only line up with the head and the block - with proper orientation to the holes in one way.

Are those new heads or reworked heads?

Hey thanks! I did notice that one extra hole after I got it set on the block. I did get it all figured out, just wish that one wasnt so close to the cam. Its almost like you need a LONG tip on the end. Almost thought I was going to have to loosen the cam. Glad I didnt.. enough wiggling and it was good.. here's some more pics.

And they are reworked. Been degreased, new valve seals, guides checked out fine. Had the valves re-seated, installed 2 (newer but used) Chain tensioners, pressure tested, and as they said, good by the factory standards. More pics of the progress..

Anytime you take a torque reading, the bolts/nuts should be lightly oiled.

When I installed my heads on my new 3.2 I did it before I installed the cams - didn't want to mess with them being in the way.

Also, just as Jason said, lightly oiling the bolts allows a true torque reading.

LOL... now you just added to your workload I take it.

Only thing I cant seem to figure out where they went to, are those stupid timing cover bolts. Guess I'll be out getting some of those here soon. Well she's all timed, and the big part of the front end is on. Exhaust comes tommorow, a few mounts, and I think I'm going to drop her back into place.

Just the height from the top of the cap to the bottom of the threads. It screws in tight, just dosen't ''bottom out'' the threads. Hope that makes more sence. I"ll get some pics up soon.

I will say this tho... after bolting on the front, I stood back and looked, and heard a crack of lightning. In Feburary!! A sign of things to come? LoL almost like outta frankenstein or something. :)

LoL... that means I bought a bunch of stuff from you I don't need anymore.. :) I will honestly say tho, I always enjoyed driving the V-6's, but that sound of the V-8's with a nice exhaust is starting to test my patience. I can tell you that after my woman ditches the Malibu, I hope to talk her into a 99 if I can find a nice one to work on. :) Just don't go anywhere anytime soon, maybe for enough stuff I'd just drive up there and pick it up. :) I'm just glad THIS money pit is almost complete!

do you mean the cap doesn't sit flat against the valve cover because the threads are to long? Or the threads arnt as long as the stock cap so it just doesn't screw in as far.

It bottoms out. They are too long, but it seems to hold fluid out.. filled it with water and turned it upside down.. nothing came out.. so it might be ok. Wont know for sure until its on and running.
