Hi,
I am wanting to send an oil sample from my new motor to Blackstone to have it tested. This way I can make sure there isnt excesive metal ect in it. On their website it says that I should rin the engine for about 20 minutes and then take a sample. I can't do this....the trans is out and the intake is off. Themotor was last run about a month ago. Should I be okay taking a sample as is, or should I wait til I fire it back up in the spring and then take a sample? Thanks

Drain all the old oil into a clean bucket. Stir said oil with a clean paint stirer on a drill. Take sample and send it in. Make sure everything is clean, because they will come back and tell you someone put paint in your engine. Don't ask me how I know this.

You can take a cold sample just fine. They tell you on the package that if you do make sure to put that on the info card you send in with the sample.

X2 on the CLEAN paint stir stick
They can find all kinds of interesting stuff in oil samples. I sent one in at my old job and one of the tech's thought they'd be funny and put a little KY in the there, we ended up putting 6 new injectors in because the sample came back that the internals of 1 or more injectors were bad.

Best way to take an oil sample is to have the engine ran for 5-10 mins and take it out mid stream. But the stir method and telling them that it was from a cold engine works too.

FYI when we clean sample bottles etc at work we use 99% iso alcohol. Just make sure its all evaporated before you put any oil in contact with the container or tools there it wont take long to evaporate.

Did you get a kit? They will send you the bottles, and all that. I wanna go take it down and hand deliver mine this spring when I get another 3,000 on this oil. Kinda curious to see what their lab looks like. :)

They are sending me one. I hadn't looked at where they were located. I guess I could just hand deliver it.:woo-hoo:

And when you get your results you will find that Phosphorus and Zinc will be lower with todays oil than what we would like on our SHO's you may want to get some of this to save some ware.

Make sure you read the whole whole page of what it does for you. Not just the title.

Interesting. I may have to look into this a little more. With the way the car will be driven, a little extra protection is a good thing.

Heh, yeah Blackstone is located in your town, so you can save on shipping. I just got a kit and was going to use it on the 95 until I found the oil level low and topped it off, then realized I need to wait until next time now. Adding fresh oil this late in the mileage would skew the results.

My 4Runner has 103k on it. I think I'll use it for that.

The kit has a small vial, some insulation, a card to write your information, and a canister to put it all in. I heard that it's better to put the main canister in a box as the USPS sometimes delays shipping if you mail just the canister b/c they think it's hazardous material, which it isn't.

Expensive and not really necessary. Just use "high-mileage" motor oil; e.g. Castrol GTX High Mileage. They have the beneficial zinc and phosphorus levels because high-mileage oil formulations are not constrained by catalytic converter longevity factors. More broadly, any motor oil that is not labeled GL-4 or GL-5 "energy conserving" motor oil will be fine; e.g. Rotella 10W-30.

Not necessarily. They have a space to provide how much oil you added between changes...

High Mileage oil is not avail in all grades that some of us use. And a quite a few people run there engines much harder than others. No 2 drivers or cars are alike so neither should our oil or additive package.

My frank advice: don't waste your time and money. A single oil analysis means absolutely nothing. They are only useful if taken regularly over time as a trend indicator. If you are concerned about metal in your new engine, the better check is to get a filter cutter, open the filter, unroll the element, and inspect it for particles.
