Should cranking the engine w/ just the starter produce enough oil pressure to make the light go off? I ask this because no amount of cranking w/ just the starter seems to make it go off. Light goes off after the engine catches and is revving towards 1800 rpm before it settles down to idle.

I ask this because I replaced the rod bearings ~5k miles ago (preventative, old ones showed little wear) as well as the oil pressure sensor. The engine has always ticked a little (before and after bearing replacement, most pronounced when listening from the drivers side wheel well, although I think its coming from the top end.) Should I be worried about this, or is this normal?

Yes, the motor should be able to build up enough pressure to put the oil pressure light out with the motor cranking without spark. When I did my rod bearings I cranked it untill the light went out, and evertime I change the oil I do that. It usually takes 20-30 seconds, but it will go out.

WOW, 20-30 seconds....
so thats why mine dosent go out. i only crank for like 5-10 secs, after an oil change..
and i did it when i changed the RB's, but light was still on though.. but it went off before the motor started.

that starter is going to be a tad warm wont it???

Well, I'm sure that the starter gets warm, but no warmer than it does getting heat soak from the motor when you are sitting in stopped traffic on a hot day. I would also rather warm up my starter, and know that my motor is completely lubricated, than save the starter and forsake the bearings....

im with you on the bearing/starter part...

this is a thought... could you splice into the wiring before the DIS module, and run a wire to a toggle switch in the car, then back to the DIS module, that way you can disable the DIS module, and crank the motor till you get OP then as the light goes off, hit the switch... motor turns on, with no lack of OP.

the only draw back that i can think of, is that your cranking the motor without OP for that long, and your alowing wear to take place in certain areas of the motor... ( you know were)

just a thought...

or you could just get an oil accumulator and be done with it.... :nut: :laugh_ti:
