Hey everyone.
Could bad valve cover gaskets leak bad enough to make it look like the trans-to-engine seam is leaking? Thanks!

Use a mirror and a good flashlight to actually inspect the perimeter of the valve cover. It takes patience and persistance to inspect the whole thing, but it will either confirm whether that is the source of the leak or not. A leaking valve cover gasket is most likely to cause oil to drain down either the front or rear of the engine (as viewed from the front of the car).

FWIW, the rear oil pan gasket or the rear main seal are the normal culprits for oil seepage/lakage at that point.

Yes, a top end leak can work its way down to the seam between the trans and the block.

As suggested above, inspect the valve covers closely and carefully for signs of leaking oil. Follow the trail!

You can get a dye from most auto parts stores for the detection of a leak and its source, or point of origin.

Be prepared for the possibility that the oil between the block and bellhousing is due to a rear crankshaft seal leak.

Lastly, as with any leak, look for the wet spot!
