the horribly overpriced gasket set is around 75 bucks. Why it is so damn expensive is beyond me. After replacing mine I wondered if would have been possible to just carefully pry each well gasket out, coat both sides with a good quality rtv and replace. Anybody here ever have any success rehabing these seals? Next time one leaks, hopefully about 10 years from now, I think I will try this method.

BTW, is a valve lash check due? Digging your way down to the valves is a considerable part of the battle. May as well do them and plugs and wires while you're there.

well the valve covers and plug well seals all come in a set from Felpro. My plug wells were leaking so i decided to do the RTV on the old seals and just slap it back together. Well within 1000 miles, I was already getting oil back in the plug wells so I don't recommend doing it this way. Just go out and get the Felpro set and do it right. You have to take off the intake, all of the hoses that are attached to the intake, and the valve covers themselves. It's not too hard of a job. Just take your time and watch where everything goes.

mort,
The correct fel-pro gasket part # VS50378R. You can find them at Autozone.com for $72. Might be hard to find on the site. Maybe you can search by part #. You will probably need two new gaskets for the intake if it hasn't been replaced in a long time. Motorcraft part # E9DZ-9439-A. You will need two and the cheapest I've seen is Fordpartsonline.com $12.14 each + shipping.

If this is the first time the intake has been off the car, you may have trouble when you're taking off all of the gaskets. Mine were all brittle and just broke into pieces. I ordered the entire upper gasket set from fordpartsnetwork, but I see that now the price is $285 eek! They also have just the intake gaskets and everything on their site, plus they are very easy to work with. The website is www.fordpartsnetwork.com

I wanted to offer a suggestion about the sealant option. Don't do it. Fix the problem at the root source with new parts in this case. Don't band-aide the problem and hope it will go away. Silicon added to gaskets is a temporary fix. If you choose to do this as an interim fix make sure to clean the original gasket with a mild amount of degreaser and warm water. (off the head of course!!!) if you don't the silicon will not stick to the gasket too well due to the oil and grease. If you want it to last long term...do the new gaskets.

Brittle gaskets? I trust you're referring to the gaskets between the intake runners and the secondary butterflies/main plenum, right? The runner to head gaskets are metal and completely reusable unless they're all bent or gouged up for some reason.

To replace plug well seals you certainly don't need to buy an entire upper gasket set...the felpro kit as already mentioned will suffice. You get 6 plug well seals and 2 new cam cover gaskets. Don't worry about your intake to head gaskets, they will most likely be in good condition.

Now, if you decide to dissemble the intake while it's off the car, I recommend new gaskets for it. Those are a fabric gasket and will likely come off in bits and pieces. You can buy an intake gasket set from Ford for approximately $30.
