Oil filter problem

Okay, so I got everything hooked up on my car and all that and was going to start it up. It wouldn't start up probably due to the fact that it's been sitting for so long. BUT. I walked away from my car and looked back and noticed oil all over on the ground. Not good. So, I looked for where it is coming from and noticed that if I turn the oil filter, the whole piece that it's mounted to turns a little bit too, then stops turning. What do I do?

I'm talking about that whole silver thing that the oil filter screws onto. It, along with those two tubes coming off the right of it, rotates a little bit if you turn the oil filter...

That "silver thing" is the oil cooler. Engine coolant is used to cool the engine oil. Use a 30mm socket and tighten it up a little. If that dosen't fix it it's time for a new "oil cooler to block" gasket. I prefer to use the correct one from the dealer. You can also use a gasket from an old oil filter as a replacement.

make sure to "oil" the new gasket before cranking it down...just like an oil filter seal.

Ugh. Well I need a new oil cooler now. SWEET. Apparently when the radiator smashed into the filter and crushed that, it also bent up the ring on the oil cooler where the filter gasket sits so now my filters won't fit properly and they just leak. It's pretty awesome.

Well, I got the oil cooler swapped. Mine was even worse than I thought it was...

interisting - an engine I picked up out of a scrap yard had a VERY similiar looking incident with the oil cooler. When loading the engine the chain squished onto the oil filter and I didn't think twice of it until I got home and took it apart a week or so later - same problem squished. Good thing is you can cut the bolt down and do like what was said, a remote oil cooler if need be......

HA! I should take some better pictures... It was a ****** to fit. I had to use -12AN lines and fittings and there's hardly any room to route them. It has been a VERY good mod though.



As far as the bolt... I have my original somewhere. I wouldn't try to straighten the bent one... I wouldn't trust it. If you do an oil cooler, you'll need to have the orignal cut and rewelded to exclude the stock heat exchanger.
