Well I was driving today and Im going to slap on some new Pirelli Z rated tires and I hear like a metal on metal tink or ping come from my engine and behind me I see at least 25 feet of smoke. So I pull over and look at my engine and I see the regular oil drip from my leaky valve covers but theres more oil than usual..So im looking more and I see oil shot all the way back to where the Y pipe splits and theres oil dripping from my whole exhaust system. Now Im confused because If i let the thing Idle it smokes bad of course and it looks like smoke is coming from the inside of the cat. Could that just be a leaky cat emitting smoke , like propelling the smoke from the leaky cat? I know theres more problems but Im trying to diagnose this properly. Im gonna take it to my shop tommorow and spray the whole block with a few cans of brake clean or parts cleaner. just looking for some advice. Im a mechanic by trade and Im STUMPED help please!

Oil hits cat. Cat is very hot. Cat turns oil into oil smoke instantly. You really need to figure out where the oil is coming from, and, actually, figure out whether it's oil at all; it might be transmission fluid from you having blown the tranny up. Do you have an automatic or manual? what year? These are the things we need to know.

well I understand a hot cat would constitute smoke and alot of it but the fact its smoking from all areas where exhaust leaks could be and its not exhaust! Oil is dripping everywhere on the underbody , but its also all over the lower half of the block and subframe, and like I said I know it has other oil leaks (ie valve cover)the fact it SHOT all the way down the exhaust system is a mystery and its a 92 MTX

it could be coming from your front cover - or could be power steering fluid or like hawkeye said maybe trans fluid. You NEED to power wash under the car get it all cleaned up, run the motor and watch where it is coming from. I'd advise you to do that before you drive it anymore because if it is trans fluid you are risking a car fire. Seen more than one vette that blew a trans - trans fluid shot out of the dipstick tube, hit the header and **** instant toasty vette.

When installing a Y-pipe, a friend and I accidentally pinched the PS hose between the manifold and the Y, it poured PS fluid into the exhaust and smoked tons. We're lucky it never caught fire.

Thank you everyone for all the responses. I checked out the engine bay today @ my shop and I pulled the codes. Turns out there are only a few simple codes such as knock sensor( from running real dry on oil I assume?) and TPS and o2 of course. The "oil" that smoked all crazy yesterday is actually ATF from the output seal of the trans for the passenger side cv shaft. So since I work @ a trans shop im gonna bench build a beefy MTX and sho out.(since the car still has original trans @ 178,***. In the process Im gonna change those leaky valve cover gaskets.

Update

Turns out a bench build for a MTX isnt in my budget right now. (even though I work in a trans shop) im so busy still and the money isnt there, anyways I was on the way to autozone today to get my output seals and the trans wasnt happy of course, slipping in and out of gear. grinding in all gears bad, but I got it home and parked it. So I have the seals now but after researching everyones ideas and "how to's" for the output seals, really what is the best way to pound those in my trans w/o screwing up the case. I know Loc-tite and some care will help its chances of not leaking, but im gonna get a few seals (for any screw ups) . ;)

I always have used a socket with an extension in it that is slightly smaller or the same o.d. as the seals od and that normally works really well. I just did mine on my 93 mtx the other day. I haven't drove it yet to check for leaks as I still have my subframe down.

Ur front main seal may finally starting pouring oil out. Its right under the front cat and will drip right onto it. and the oil pan should aslo start to look wet always b/c of the oil.

ouch... that probably means you destroyed the differential, and you're going to need a new MTX. That's a bummer.

Hence wanting to part out the car lol. Im stuck because I have a SHO with a bad trans case and some frontal damage that requires a new hood and fender, and the interior is ok, drivers seat is ripped of course, and needs a new headliner....BUT I wanna build a beast SHO and dont know if I wanna invest the time into all the problems or just part out and buy another SHO in clean shape. Since I got this one for $700 with only 150k and mint fenders and such, and its my first SHO I dont wanna lose hope in my new found fascination in the Yamaha powered Ford. So like i said Im STUCK.
