Ok, I removed the oil warmer/cooler from my motor today assuming that I would find a block to cooler gasket and a bolt to cooler gasket. I only found the rubber seal that goes between the cooler and the block. Shonut lists two gaskets here, some O-ring gasket for the bolt that I could not find. Are these not on some later model SHO motors, did I miss it, or is it not there?

Thanx, Doug

There are two rubber seals at the junction of the heat exchanger and the block. One is about the size of an oil filter seal and the other is small and seals the bolt shaft to the exchanger. The smaller one is held captive inside of a little channel on the exchanger. The other end of the exchanger, the end the filter attaches to, of course uses the filter's rubber seal.

Ok, the one that is the size of the oil filter gasket between the block and the exchanger was there, and was held to the exchanger by little tabs. That was the only seal that was there.

So, there is another seal that seals the smaller bolt hole to the block? Why did this motor not have one?

No, it seals the bolt to the exchanger. If someone removed the bolt before, they might have accidently tore the little one out and not have even known it.

Ok, so behind the flare portion of the bolt and between the exchanger goes this gasket? That is interesting as in this motor the bolt was just bolted to the exchanger with no gasket at all. I found the part number and ordered it. Expensive little sucker. Is it really needed?

Doug,

No it doesn't go behind the flare portion of the through bolt. It sits in a groove inside the cooler, right next to the block. You don't put it on the bolt, you put it in the cooler and the bolt passes through it. Yes it is expensive for what it is, I think I paid 9.00 or 12.00 for one once at a dealer.

At one time I also thought there should have been a gasket up against the block surrounding the through bolt. But if you think about the path the oil is taking through that bolt, you'll understand why they designed it for that location.

I could go and take a pic of exactly where it should be placed if you're still uncertain.

Ok, I found it, just a flat O-ring. I didn't realize it would be inside the cooler, actually inside the bolt hole. Well, does that little sucker actually need to be replaced? It is not nearly has soft and plyable as the block to exchanger gasket, but it is still moveable.

Thanx, Tom.

Well, crud I wouldn't have bought the dumb thing then. Maybe I will just keep it around. Not many of them left.

Sell it to someone that really loses theirs for a profit of 2.00 dollars. Or post it on FleaBay and retire to the Bahamas.
