Has anybody thought of creating something, like a plastic or fiberglass shield, that molds around the starter in an effort to shield it from oil that drips during oil changes?

I challenge all out there to come up with a design. I'll buy one.

It would seem easy to design...simply mold it around the starter and use one of the starter bolts to fasten it. Make it with a curved ****** that goes up towards the engine block until it finally meets it, creating a "wall" at the top that extends downward towards the front half of the subframe.

The bottom half would be molded in such a way to divert the oil from the leaking filter toward the front of the subframe. The oil typically drips towards the back of the subframe, on the side closer to the rear, and always splatters all over. It would be nice to sheild all the wiring from the oil as well. Maybe the bottom part of the shield can be "funnelled" near the end of the shield in order to direct the oil into one predictable exit point?

There's no way to change oil in a SHO without getting at least SOME of it all over...unless you have somebody else do it.

Damn starter!

sounds like you have the design all set. I can buy one from you.

Actually here is your answer: Cut the end off of a 2 liter bottle and use it to unscrew the filter. When it starts to leak, it falls in the 2 liter.

Not a bad idea, though I might use something more flexible and smaller than a 2 liter...something shaped like a sock but more rubber-like in substance.

Hmmm....

When I change my filter, I slide a plastic grocery bag over my starter, and secure it with a large rubber band. :thumb:

Yeah I've been thinking of something like that for the starter. I'm tired of the mess every time I pull the filter. My friend is a manager at a sheet metal shop so I'm going to see if he can come up with any ideas on what to use and how to design it. I don't think they can do anything thicker than 18 gauge, so the metal will be a little flexiblebut maybe we can come up with something over the next few weeks. I'm still working on getting my new motor wired up and ready to start up so I won't have much time until I get her running here hopefully by this weekend. But I'll start taking a look at how to design it maybe and I'll see what can be done.

Thanks,
Andrew

I'm going to get a remote filter setup from Summit and move the filter to a place were its a lot easier to get to.

I considered sheet metal, but with all the power running down there to the starter, it might spark and short something out, or cause a fire or other type of damage.

I think something non-metal, like fiberglass or plastic, would work better??

shobros has a remote mount oil filter that'll take it away from the starter.

I just let it drip on the starter.

But I do tear the starter apart, clean it up, regrease it, and reinstall it every 3 or 4 oil changes.

Still on the factory installed starter too.:)

Taking my starter out to clean it and regrease it 2-3 times a year doesn't sound like a lot of fun. I mean, I enjoy working on my car, but not THAT much.

Guess it really depends on how many miles you drive. ;) As well as to what extent you want to maintain the rig.

My SHO, like the rest of my rigs gets driven less than 10k a year. :salute:

I use an FL1A filter on my car.

I take the filter box, tear it open all the way, and wedge it lengthwise under the filter and oil cooler, over the starter, and loosen the filter. The oil funnels right into the drain pan every time, no fuss, no muss, and when I'm done, I toss the funnel in the trash.
