Lately my SHO seems to be burning oil, mostly when I shift then it goes away, leads me to think valve seals. but sometimes it don't smoke. Today I was going to show a co-worker my SHO. So I let it warm up and before he came out I gave it a little rev to check for blue, and nothing. I was puzzeled, gave it another rev up to 4k and yet nothing, did that 2 more times and nothing at all? I'm lost.

Smoking under load is normally worn rings, or really bad blow-by sending oil into the intake to burn.

Smoking at all times is rings, smoking when load is applied is usually valve seals. Thats what it seems like at times, but thats when it's a little low on oil the instant I fill it up it seems to not burn, or from what I can tell it doesn't. Might change when i am driving. If it was bad rings the thing would always smoke and like i said last night it was fine and didn't and today it didn't?

Actually, its typically the opposite. Smoking when under closed throttle/high vacuum or a puff between shifts is typically valve guides or seals. When it puffs on startup it is typically valve stem seals.

Bad rings typically manifest themselves first as a smoking in the higher RPM range or when under a lot of load.

Here's the funny thing, when MiltownSHO was up visit my dad had a dream one night about the PCV system being clogged or something  He doesn't even own a SHO and never has yet he is always showing everyone who hasn't seen my SHO, explaining to them it isn't "normal". Anyways, I'm trying to see if its related to that, but it's built into the intake and all that fun stuff. I heard something about the PCV system and the throttle body? Any help here? When I had a side of the intake off there was tons of caramel in there?

Oh wait I had it wrong, I thought of it as load being applied, but then I didn't think about the clutch being in :bonk: But like I said thats the only time I ever seen it smoke, or when I have down shifter coming to a stop, once again the clutch being held in and then let out and load being put back on. Also I have started it to see a little blue come out and then go away? It only started this recently, eally makes me angry  I put a month and a half of my life into this car just too see this happen :sigh:

that "caramel" is oil ;) The PCV hose attatches to the bottom of the throttle body, its the largest hose attatching to the throttle body(besides the air intake hose of course  ) There is no PCV valve, that hose goes to a piece under the intake, bolted to the block, where it sucks the crankcase vapors in. I know there are some issues with the PCV system but i dont remember off hand what goes wrong....a search could turn up something :thumb:

This explanation really points to a valve seal issue. Also, to add to my previous post, it seems that its pretty normal to get some oil in the intake on the SHO's. I think its a problem with the pcv system design....i dont think thats your problem, but you might want to clean that intake :)

I know the "caramel" is oil, but the thing smokes sometimes and doesn't other and somethign worse and sometimes barely at all. Which if it's a PCV issue having to do with vaccum that would totally explain it. Maybe I should pull off the intake and do lots o' cleaning?

Definetly couldnt hurt to pull the intake off and get all that crap out, and see what happens :thumb:

Yeah, maybe I'll just pull my intake and valve covers off of my 90 and paint them up, that way I have a car thats driveable. And then take them off of my 92 and put the painted ones on, I'd like t have it painted up anyways :)

Use some Castrol GTX Hi Mileage oil. Better than the "patch" to stop the smoking....

My MTX would puff a nice cloud between high-RPM shifts sometimes; but it never did it consistantly. It also puffed a good deal on real cold starts.
It would go through the same amount of GTX or GTX High-Milage no matter what grade. In fact I think it burned 5w-30 the least.

... stop smoking...

:bonk: Anyways, tomorrow if the weather is ggood and someone takes my shift at work I'm going to to pull the intake and valve covers off of my 90 and then it goes from there, hopefully it is a PCV related issue.
