Well, I grenaded trans #3. This time, instead of the usual 3rd gear wipe, I managed to snap the entire input shaft it two. Everyone like carnage pics, right? ;) I was shifting into 2nd, BTW.

When did you snap anything of this caliber? You double and tripple the power of nearly ANY car and this stuff WILL happen. Sometimes it is the luck of the draw as there are more powerful SHO's out there and I don't think I've seen a break like this.

Sorry to hear that his happened, but that's a trophy piece! I would suggest shot peening and shimming the next gear set.

Honestly, it does not really bother me anymore; I expect it. The worst part is the load of shit I get when I gotta call one of my buddies for a tow, lol.

But yes, I am proud :)

Not really.

never.......but stuff like this is the exact reason why ill never go boosted........and i agree when u start jumpin power that much u can expect stuff to break.......but the average boosted SHO pushes what 300-400hp?????, breakin stuff at that low of power just dont seem worth it to me.......to many stock cars out now pushin well over that

anyways back on topic

And out of those "stock cars" that push that much power, how many of their transmissions will hold double their stock engine output?

For what its worth, our MTX's are DAMN strong as is. Nik97, how much torque are you putting to the wheels? How often would you say your turbo SHO sees peak power output in a week? How many times did you hit max boost between the time that tranny was installed and now?

The answer to those questions explain further my point above, ultimatesho.

^I drive it like a boosted SHO :)

It's worth it to me. Finding a used MTX is usually no problem and replacing them is a breeze for me. Sure it gets a little annoying but it's not your average boosted SHO;)

didn't u reinforce it somehow. lol

Nice carnage pic!

Yes I did and apparently, it worked. The reinforcement was made to eliminate the shaft flex and eventual 3rd gear destruction following. Now on to the next weak link...

I'd call 350/350 an average boosted SHO...:woo-hoo:

The "average" boosted SHO has a Vortech on it... Matching hp/tq numbers aren't average. What is your everyday street tune numbers? I ask because I remember you running a pertty low boost number.

An average boosted SHO is... Broken.

That brings a whole new level of meaning to the phrase "Oh, snap!"

Wow. The title of the post is perfect.
I have never seen an input shaft snap in that manor. I once saw the tip of an input shaft that had snapped, and the splines were actually helical.
This snap is weird. Maybe defective materials or something. Snapping at the thickest part of the shaft, and so cleanly...
I once thought I snapped my input shaft, but it turns out I blew out my stage III clutch disk.
Then I got the HD gearset so I wouldn't have to worry about it. Only downside is the little bit of gear whine.

Ya, that was just sort of a generalization. The old street tune on 8psi and stock internals was 360/360 wheel. Currently, with 12-14 psi, I'd say somewhere in the 450wtq, range. The latest dyno tune was inconclusive as the fuel pump began to fail when we started trying to make power and add timing. The first 2 degrees we added over base(whatever "base" is -SCT tuned) netted 410wheel before the pump gave out/ got hot. Basically, the car is still on the 8psi tune with meth but normally sees 12psi. While that's not exactly ideal, it does not ping with the meth and slightly lower CR and it maintains a healthy ~11.0 AFR.

The area where the shaft split is the thinnest between the bearings. Also, did you know the transaxle in an xB with a 1.5L tq monster has a thicker input shaft with a shorter distance betwwen the bearings? Just making a point, lol.
