My new Ford timing belt, for my '94 MTX, has no front or rear cam markings to line up TDC. However, the two markings at the cranck, indicating 3.0 or 3.2L, are present.

Do I have the right belt and or when did suppliers stop putting the cam markings on the belt ?

You may want to take that overpriced, insufficiently marked belt back to Ford, get your money back and order the properly marked Gates T248 from RockAuto.com for $34.77. You can get it from other sources, but RockAuto.com is the cheapest I have found. The Gates T248 looks like this when installed and has provided excellent service in many installations.

Yeah, the belt was pricey but I do not know of any RockAuto.com distributors up here in the Great White North; Toronto Ontario Canada. I will call another dealership in the morning to verify the markings, but in the mean time how would I go about installing this belt. I have performed a search and have printed a copy of the highlighted link for reference. On another note, does anyone have any tips for the water pump installation; ie, sealent application and location.

Rockauto.com has a great price on the belt. However, if you don't want to go that route, The one mark on the belt is enough to go by. Align the cams to the 12 o'clock position. The dot on the cam pulleys should align with the marks on the backplate. Align the crank to the 5 o'clock position. The dot on the crank pully should align with the mark on the block. Install the belt and if you've done it properly, the belt mark should line up at the crank pully mark correctly, depending if you have the 3.0 or the 3.2.

BD,

Have you solved your intermitent problems, or are you still working on them? Did your real time and/or static tests of the DIS system help to solve the problem?

The reason I ask is that there are some current questions regarding DIS problems, and thought you could shed some light on the testing proceedures and results.

Share your experiences with the gang! rangerj

Betty, if you will send an email to [email protected], I will return the letter with Ford's 3.0L timing belt change procedure. The one-mark timing belts do not guarantee correct alignment of the belt. It can still be installed a tooth off in some instances.

The waterpump, timing belt, front cranck seal and CPS have already being purchased from Ford. Next time I will check the ship direct pricing from the Autozone and Rockauto into Canada.

What method do you use to position the three shafts (Cam X 2 and Cranck); manual(by hand), manual (turn the cranck before belt removal) or via ignition ?

Any suggestions as to replacing the front cranck seal ?

Rangerj, with regards to the DIS system, I wil update my post on "INTERMITTENT FAILURE".

Also by reading one of the other posts, I see that the timing belt has marks on it. When I did the motor swap, I accidnetly loosened the timing belt and had to reinstall it. My timing belt had no markings on it and I had to do it be eye. I aligned the cams to the 12 o'clock positions and the crank to the 5 o'clock position. Since I have a 3.2L motor in my car, I aligned everything up and tightened everything down and it seemed to be ok.

My question here is that I have the 3.0 tensioning system installed and I want to know what the 3.0 and 3.2 marks are about. I understand that there are supposed to be 2 marking on it for the two different engines. Since I have no markings on this belt, what is the deal with this? I did it be eye and everything seemed to be ok. The car's performance doesn't seem to be off, but I am having serious oil burning issues (see separate post). If I aligned everything up with the timing marks on the respective pulleys, should everything be OK?

If you align everything correctly with all the marks you shouldn't have an issue. The routing of the ATX is different vs. the MTX which is the reasoning for the different marks. All in all the marks don't matter as long as everything lines up correctly.

BD,

If you have not as yet removed the timing belt, you just line up the crankshaft mark, at about the 5 o'clock position, with the mark on the oil pump.

The camshaft sprockets will be lined up with the marks on the rear timing belt cover, or they will 180 degrees off. If they are off, then rotate the crankshaft one more time (clockwise only).

The crankshaft rotates two time to the one time of the camshafts.

If you already have the belt off, then set the crankshaft as previously mentioned. Then manually rotate the camshafts to the proper marks, that is the marks on the camshaft sprockets aligned with the marks on the rear timing belt covers.

SDPatt has some great photos of the alignment marks, etc. These are very helpful. rangerj

PS I look forward to the update on the intermitent problem. I hope you have it solved.

The link to the photos of the timing belt alignment at installation time is shown in my above post and again here.
