When I purchased my 96 in october the odometer was stuck at 125 and some change. The lady told me they hadn't drove it much and it probly had somewhere around 130.Since then it has moved 26 miles twice. Weired if you ask me.
I'm getting tired of a non working odometer. I have cleaned the conections on the back but still no luck. I was told the computer stores the mileage and if I put in a new unit that I could reset the odometer and have the correct mileage and a working unit. Is this true or was I fasley told. Is there something else that might cause my problem.
Mileage is currently at 12552 and 1/2.

hey new shofan.

Aliens. I know for a fact aliens stopped my odometer because it's the same number as my SHO cut off date. Aliens also like to stick an a-80 lug nut that I can not get off with the original 1996 tire repair kit and spare. I'm sitting with a flat tire, no tow truck to a place with an "deep" lug removal, and a spare on the front. Mine stopped at 177,580 and has never moved.

Well, if its not aliens, its likely elves.

The problem is that older mechanical parts, when not used regularly, tend to get stuck more often than new ones. And as I just noted in another folder, these cars are no longer anywhere near new, so if they have been sitting about, when put back in use there will be a tendency for things to stick and hence not work well.

Its my guess that the only way to fix your problem is going to be to take things apart enough to actually take out the odometer and take it apart and clean it or to replace it completely.

I was under the impression that rolling odometer numbers around is a strict no-no. That can get one involved in anti-tampering lawsuits, etc.

Don't know why the odometer stopped, probably something to do with being a twenty year old car. If you're interested in a fairly close actual mileage match, I have a full working 96 gauge cluster I have been saving for just such an emergency. It has 134,000 on it. I could probably be enticed to sell it.

I've got another gauge cluster from a 97. It stopped working 10 years ago at 042395 miles. I wouldn't sell it for anything.

I'd like to get mine working again too. It probably has 185,000 miles on it by now.
Is there any computer circuitry involved with the flipping of the numbers? Otherwise,
I'll just assume it's an old part.

I am not suggesting rolling the numbers, but rather soaking the entire mechanism in a light solvent and then blowing it dry with forced air. That should be enough to get it moving. Hopefully.
