so after wrapping my 92 mtx around a poll when the steering column locked up, i got me a white 94 mtx. OR IS IT ? i appears the car may have been ATX or something else. basically my situation is i put the car on the lift for a general lookover the day i bought it so see what i needed (obviously ebrake cables and other common shit like plug seals. what ive noticed is that the whole shiftbox aka the rods that come out of the floor are GONE and the hole has been JB welded up. another hole has been made in the floor about a foot closer to the front of the car and i have 2 shift cables coming out and those are clipped and wired to the trans. is this the old 89' setup ? is this some weird custom rig ? It shifts just as tight as my old MTX but i dont get it. whats gonna happen if i need repairs ?

that sucks.... yeah the shift linkage in cable from is from the older gen 1 mostly models. You could possibly still mount the rod shifter with some cutting and a little ingenuity.

If the eighth character of the VIN number is a "Y", then it left the factory as an MTX car.

It definitely sounds as if someone "downgraded" from the stock rod shifter to the older style cable shifter. Not sure why anyone would do this, but anything is possible.

If you want to return to a rod shifter, you can probably find one here in the classifieds, by posting a WTB, or on eBay.
