I have a '91 virtually stock (Eibachs and Tokicos). It came with the JBL Premium sound system, cassette player head unit only (Mickey Mouse cupholder and change purse underneath).

I'd like to get and install the CD player in that spot, BUT...

There is no CD player control button on the cassette head unit. Do I need a different head unit?

What CD player do I search for? Any Taurus/Sable Gen I (Gen II?) Some have said that any Ford OEM CD player will work. Is that true? There are a lot more Mustangs in the junkyards than SHO's.

Are there other quirks and foibles I need to know about with regard to this project?

I'm not interested in replacing the factory sound system with aftermarket - I'm not supersensitive to sound quality, and I like to hear the engine in addition to whatever is coming out of the speakers.

Help, please.

Your current head unit will work fine, but you'll need some additional cables to connect the oem cd player.

Look on ebay. Any single DIN CD from Ford will work, but you'll need the cables.

Here are the cable part numbers you'll need:

1: Single cable from Deck to CD Player.. hooks into top right of head unit and direct to cd player.. also has small plastic grounds that slide onto the back of each unit. Part Discription: Audio & Ground for Slave CD, #F4DF14588HA. Price $45-65.

2: Split power supply. If you take out your coin/cup tray and feel in there to the left you should find a extra wire harness (probably black) hooked to a dummy fitting. This will be connected to the new power cable with an additional fitting for the grey one now on your head unit. This will also have a lead with fewer fittings for the slot on the cd player. Part #E9SF15041AB3.

I had a really, really hard time finding these cables. Check with your dealer, but they more than likely wont carrier them. Lucky for me, there is a Ford Audio rep in Albuquerque, NM 1 hour from me who had them. He said he had a few so if you can't get them locally, call him for price and availablity. I searched and searched online and couldn't find anyone.

Here's the info:

Ask for John in Ford Audio

He charged me $46 for the first one and $34 for the second one. BTW I bought a cd player from a 94 mustang part number was F5ZF19B160AB.

Hope this helps?

I have a'91 & '94 combo and found that the head units will interchange. As soon as I install the cd the display on the cass. idicates 'cd' and functions are retained.
Also, the combos in the Thunderbirds will work. If you find one in a wrecking yard, make sure to get the power harness, the colors or location may be different.

I think the easiest thing would be to get a cheaper aftermarket cd player. All you would have to do it get is a wiring harness which you could get at Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I think this would be easier than doing a lot of hunting trying to find the appropriate wires and components.

Crutchfield sells an add-on DIN cd that will fit perfectly and even looks alot like stock! The display is green also. The price was around $150. I installed one in my SLO. Mind you it plays thru the radio.

I have a single CD from a 98 Mustang GT. It works fine. I have the cables that came out of the mustang, but unfortunatly the cables are slightly different in how they wire into the car.

Get the stock setup, it matches the dash better, and is 'cleaner' looking.

I bought a factory take unit from a '99 Mustang off eBay for $125 and got the interconnect harness from the local shop that does all the dealership installation work for about $35.
