Hey guys I just got a 1990 and when i was driving it there wasent the noticable secondary noise that my 94 atx has. I checked to see if they were opening and the little actuators are moving when it hits about 4k but the noise isnt there?

Is the secondary noise as noticeable on these older cars as my newer one? Or what else could i look for? so far it appears as if they are opening just not sounding like they are open if that makes sense? There also wasn't the surge of power that is felt in the atx at that rpm either. The car also has a K&n panel filter if that makes a difference?

Any input before i tear the intake off is appreciated.

K&N could be clogged up with oil and grime. Check, and remove and replace with stock air filter.

Search for silencer cone or something like that. There's a little silencer you can take out of the fender that will improve the intake sound, if it hasn't been removed already. I recall 1993MTXSHO had a thread about it not too long ago.

Yes!

There were a few subtle differences in the way the intake was made through the years. Specifically, I'm thinking of the rubber intake couplers. Some were made with baffles at the x-over tube, while others had the baffles built into the aluminum of the manifold. I'm not sure what the "net" difference in sound might be.

Also, as others have stated, you should remove the air filter box and have a look in there to see if the intake air silencer cone is still present. Removal will make the car growl a little more at the 4000RPM mark.

If the intake had ever been rebuilt, the coupleing hoses might not have the "baffles" built in.

Also, if the intake was ever apart, it's possible that they did not put the intake "horns" back in(in the 'louder' car).

The other differences are the fact that the exhaust and cams are different in an ATX...And there's no EGR in the 90 (unless it was a california car).

When taken alone, none of these things would make me think the car should sound very different, but when you add all the differences up, I can understand why it might.

Ill get a video tomorrow of them opening in my ATX, every video i hear of a MTX though you cant really hear them.

They should open at around 3,800-4,000 rpms

I think its perfectly normal. There's a noticable difference in sound between the ATX and MTX (both with silencers removed). The 3.2s have a deep growl that start at or around 2900 rpm and scream when the secondaries open. The 3.0s don't get their growl until the secondaries open up.

Exactly my thoughts.

However... BBB's on a 3.0 sounds MUCH better than BBB's on an ATX, IMO. Maybe it's because of the major difference they make on the 3.0 then the 3.2.....

But as stated, make sure the silencer comes out then try it again. If it is, then start double checking everything. :thumb:

Pull the intake off and scrub the crap outta it with some Berryman's B12. You'd be amazed at the difference a "clean" intake and head ports can make. I just did it for a girl last week.

Very true. I forgot about that. I cleaned mine out last summer when I painted it, and upon reinstallation it sounded MUCH better.

I used a crap load of brake cleaner on mine. Be aware that that stuff will take paint off though...

I went through this as well when I first got my MTX. My ATX screamed after 4k, and the MTX....not so much.

Removing the horns or putting in BBBs will fix that right up.
