Normal Transmission temps

I’ve owned a lot of vehicles and it seems this SHO has had the highest temps I’ve seen ,when My motor is showing 170-185 my transmission will be around 195-200. Problem is when she gets over 200 I get a second gear shudder on brisk acceleration. Running GH tune,3 bar map and GH big intercooler.I also swapped out the rear mount to a HD mount sold by a vendor on here,didn’t help once trans gets warm. Put back to stock and trans seems to act fine. GH sent me a tune with a little less power but still does the hit or miss 2nd gear shudder ,when it shifts proper it’s firm and smooth.Doesnt do it consistently is the crazy part. Car has 36k miles and has been highly serviced . Never does this crazy shift when temps are below 190. Wonder if adding a better transmission cooler will help and keep temps down .

Have you tried changing your transmission fluid? Mine gets up to about 210 on 90 degree days after a few trips down the track.

does it do it on stock tune? definitely look to changing the transmission fluid and overfill by a pint.

I just upgraded my PP trans cooler to a Derale. At freeway speeds I was seeing over 210 all the time with my stock PP cooler . I was seeing 100 to 110 degrees above ambient here in Phoenix regardless of temp.

I upgraded and I am seeing normal driving in the 190's. I am taking a long road trip through the desert in 105 to 110 degree heat on Thursday. I will report back here with my findings.

I just upgraded my PP trans cooler to a Derale. At freeway speeds I was seeing over 210 all the time with my stock PP cooler . I was seeing 100 to 110 degrees above ambient here in Phoenix regardless of temp.

I upgraded and I am seeing normal driving in the 190's. I am taking a long road trip through the desert in 105 to 110 degree heat on Thursday. I will report back here with my findings.

Any pics of the cooler install? Did you completely bypass the PP cooler or still routing the fluid through it?

So I looked back at my last log, on a 93 almost 94 degree day outside, I my trans temp was reading 170.375 degrees during a highway pull up to 105 mph. Temp started at 165.762 right before I sent it, and the results were similar for my send from a dig on the same log. This is without an aux trans cooler as I am on a Non-pp and haven't installed one yet, but may not if temps remain in this area. Fluid has yet to be changed since I've owned it, but I plan on it this weekend. (Got it with almost 30k on the dial its currently 63k)

It will be nice to compare your data to mine. Here is a pic of my LiveWire from last summer with the stock cooler in the middle of summer 110 degrees crusing at 85 mph.

oops I lied, it was 103 mph not 105, otherwise the first pull went to 165 from a dig, the highway pull went to 170, it rose a degree when i let off then planed back out when I was cruising.

Ford doesn't have a spec for "normal" but temp can be inferred.

The workshop manual notes this:
With the engine running, check and make sure that the transmission is at normal operating temperature 82°C-93°C (180°F-200°F). Check and adjust the transmission fluid level and check for any leaks. If transmission fluid is needed, add as necessary.

The P.C.M. will set a P1783 if the transmission does overheat.

So if your not setting a D.T.C. your not overheating. Lol.

Sounds like with the hot/thin oil your either feeling the results of intermediate clutch fault. Intermediate is only used in 2 and 6. Since its intermittent I would say shift solenoid (ssc) or a valve fault. Usualy pistons or hydraulic leaks are not intermittent.

If fluid is good, you can check line pressure before digging into the trans.

Inspired by this and my comments about the wife's Flex transmission running 205°-210° with or without a boat behind it, I decided to pay close attention to the trans temp as I made the same U.P. trip with my sho last friday. Despite running 100-110 mph for a good 100 miles straight, my transmission never got above 185°. 85° ambient.

Averaging 88 mph in 107 degrees heat 2.5 hours into the drive. Hasn't gone over 200 degrees yet.

Okay! Hottest the ambient temp got was 109. Fastest I got up to 105 mph. I averaged 88 through AZ, and roughly 83 through CA. Hottest the trans got was 199.23 degrees. I would say that is a win for the upgraded cooler.

On my return trip I averaged 88 mph through CA and 95 mph through AZ. Through Coachella (big long hill sections) in 113 degree weather my trans got to roughly 205 degrees. Ambient air temps never got below 109 degrees from Palm Springs all the way to Phoenix. After getting through the hills, it leveled off at 201 degrees. I will take those numbers all day.
