Noob with Cam Seal ??

Hey all, My name is Andrew, Just joined up. Got a 96 SHO all stock except for a Borla Cat Back Exhaust.

I have a cam seal that is weeping a little oil and want to replace it. Can't get any help from the Ford Dealer. This is the seal on the Drivers Side LH of the Front Cyl. Head behind a Belt Pulley. I can't even find out the proper name for it, the best I can come up with is the 'Rear Camshaft Seal' which doesn't sound correct to me. Has anyone had this problem and know the correct name of the seal? I can't find one anywhere at local parts stores or ford dealerships.

Part number you are looking for is the camshaft seal.

Good luck finding it. Mine was leaking oil, found a seller in New Hampshire that had one so bought it.

Thanks Nick. I am on the hunt for it. I figured out there is just one cam seal on the V8 so I just need to find it. Called some places today that showed 'In Stock' and nobody actually has one in stock. I got the car in a buddy's shop and it will have to sit there until I find one. We don't want to stick the front valve cover back on until we replace it. I'll take some pics once we got it back together.

The Borlas were on it when I got the car and it sounds AWESOME! I like the sound of it better then my 5.0 Mustangs. It has a very muscular sound. The Car is Dark Silver with a Hint of Purple. Not sure of the actual color name? Grey Leather and has about 95K on the car. Looks and Runs Fantastic, I really like it. We've only had it for a few months now.

Cams welded? Since you're opening up the engine anyway, good time to check! Don't want to lose another V8 to something like that.

You can use the same National 1213N seal as the V6 cars.

As pointed out just a couple of posts up, you really need to check to be sure that the cam sprockets have been welded to the cam shafts when you have the motor open. This is an engineering fail in the design as originally they are only swagged on and eventually fail, with fatal consequences for the motor. Might as well get the all welded while you are in there.

Are you absolutely positive I can use the V6 seal? I don't mind getting the pack of 3 those come in as long as they are correct. I just don't want to waste time ordering something not correct, so if you can confirm that then I think SHOsource has them here locally.


Whats this about welding the sprockets to the cams? I have seen some discussions about that but don't really want to do any kind of 'home-grown remedy' on the car. Was there a TSB about it from Ford at any point? or is it just a fix-it coming from people in the know?

Hey Andrew, I replaced that one years ago. Pretty sure I got it at Auto Zone.
Take off the belt (spring loaded idler)
Remove pulley
Screw a small sheet metal into old seal (by hand)
Yank old one out
Press new seal in with PVC pipe or similar
Put on pulley and belt

Thanks Sam. I got everything back together with no more oil leaks and it runs great as it did before. The reason I was working on it was that there were some minor oil leaks that were giving off a burning oil smell once the car got warm. Replacing the seal was pretty straightforward, it was the finding of the seal that was a slightly bigger deal. Mike from SHOSource did email me and say that he now has some V8 Cam Seals in stock if anyone else is looking for a replacement.

What's the color code on the door VIN sticker under "EXT PT/Exterior Paint"?

Congrats on getting it fixed. Mine was leaking, as was my oil cooler. Now I have zero oil leaks on the ground. Nice change. And good info on the seals, glad to hear SHO Source has them in stock, that's great!

Definitely look into getting cams welded. This is not just preventative care, it's necessary. Once you read into the defect in the design, the importance and necessity of having the welding done becomes a priority.
