When you try to start, what happens?

-Does it crank?
-Does the tachometer move?
-When you turn the key on before 'start' do you hear the fuel pump a little? (This is a good thing)

Yes the car won't start unless the clutch switch is giving a good signal. It's so dummies like me won't try to start the car early in the morning when I was tired without pushing the clutch in and crushing my brother's bike against the garage wall.. (In an old Datsun a long time ago..)

Disconnect the clutch switch and place a wire in the wire harness, connecting the two prongs or whatever. For more info on this you can go to www.shotimes.com it's there.

Sounds more like a starter going out. When mine died it worked much like yours. Worked sometimes and later it wouldn't. Eventually, sometime soon if it's your starter it won't work at all. You hear a clicking noise when trying to start it?

You either have a loose connection to the starter resulting in an intermittent no-start condition, a bad starter solenoid, or you have a intermittently failing clutch interlock switch.

Best bet would be to crawl under the car and check the connections to the starter (esp. the S-term connection, the one that clips on to the spade lug).

It is weird cause sometimes it starts at night. It is warmer here today than it has been and it is doing the same thing. Almost seems like the clutch interlock switch. know anything about it?

The "hammer bang method" (sorry if I'm using someone's trademark! :) ) fixing the problem usually means that the solenoid is on the way to the graveyard.

Is the new starter NEW or rebuilt? Too bad you don't have an earlier model car, as the solenoid is on the fender, not the starter, and only costs $10... (I just learned the difference yesterday!)

yes, i get 1 click...bang it with hammer and she starts. turns right over....try a few times and eventually, it won't start. I talked to the guy i bought car from. it was just replaced the beginning of this month. he says he will refund me for it. vip auto has a new one for $119. I will not get under that thing and do it myself. It is the worst car i have owned to work on!!!

I don't know, but can you replace the solenoid ONLY? The rest of the starter might be good.

When the solenoid fails the "hammer bang" helps it out. It's just a magnetic switch that when you turn the key the juice flips the switch for the BIG power of the starter to go through.

The starter is actually not that tough to replace at all. And if you own a SHO you'd better learn how to work on them, at least the minor things, or have a really big piggy bank.
