My 99 won't start on a hot day after its been driven, then parked. If we open the hood,it seems to cool off after about 15-20 minutes and will restart. New battery, alternator, starter is 6 years old, replaced in 2003 at 72k,car now has 118k. Terminals are clean, but positive side seems to get dirty fairly quick. Starter relay maybe? Any thread I can pull up to learn more?
Thanks.

Might be the relay under the hood in the box. Swap it with the other one in there.

Could also be the TRS on top of the tranny. That feeds power to the relay.

The switch on top of the tranny telling the car what gear it is in. They have been know to cause issues. Try moving the shift lever a but when it won't crank May just need adjusting.

My guess is the starter (either the solenoid or brushes) are just about done, but the starter relay and MLP (nee TRS) sensor are also possible.

Next time this happens, try hammering at the starter with the tire iron from above and see if that does anything.

The TRS switch has been checked and is working correctly. I hit the starter several times with a hammer the last time it didnt start. No luck. I replaced the starter relay in the fuse box. No help,it still wouldn't start when its hot. It DOES help to open the hood for 20-30 minutes,or just wait until the sun goes down, then it starts. I have noticed the fuse box under the hood is cracked. I'm thinking there could be a terminal or wire(?) problem in the box.Any other thoughts?

Try bypassing the relay first. This will confirm the wiring to the starter from the relay. If the starter turns over then see if the relay is getting 12v when the key is on on the coil side and 12v constant at the hot side of the switched relay contact.relay

Hot wire the starter

Relay w no and nc terminals

Trs volatage values ax4n

By passed the relay, everything works fine. I've noticed the starter relay plugs into the anti-theft system.(PATS) Has anyone had a problem with the car not starting because of anti-theft system? I'm really reaching for anything right now. But if the system senses someone is trying to steal the car,no power to the starter relay and the car won't start. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Cleared the trouble code. No SES light. The car runs fine and shifts perfectly under all conditions. SES light came back after one day and 82 miles. Car still shifts with no problems. Haven't had an opportunity to to check what code comes up this time. I'll check it as soon as I can. Any ideas?

Should have started off by saying the SES light came on with trouble code P1744,torque converter wont lock up.

I would make sure the connector that is sticking straight up out of the tranny under the intake hose is clean and secure.

My car just died and refused to start last night. I had it towed to a shop, so I will let you know what they find. I would turn the ket and nothing, after doing it three times, the locks would lock and unlock. Let you guys know.

Also came up with trouble code P0177,Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Low Input. Anyone have this code? Solutions? Where is this sensor located?

It is on the pipe that the upper radiator hose connects to. It is the sensor with two wires. And that would be DTC 117.

P0117 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Low Input

Indicates the sensor signal is less than Self-Test minimum. The ECT sensor minimum is 0.2 volts or 121°C (250°F).

Grounded circuit in harness
Damaged sensor
Improper harness connection
Damaged PCM
