Well.... I finally recieved a valve cover bolt for my missing one and decided to try and install it..... the intake manifold was on and it was going in the one hole all the way to the bottom left(looking at the engine)...... didn't want to go in so I somewhat forced it..... wiggling it and what not, but did not put a lot of pressure on it. I finally got it to go in but could not get it to thread, so I take it out and decide to get heading to work.... well my car makes a funky noise during start-up.... almost like it is cranking very very slowly, then it starts..... so I was thinking what the **** was that all about, shut the car off and try again. The slow cranking noise is very slow and the rpms jump to 5k but the car does not start. Five minutes later I get the thing to start and it sounds like its running fine.... revved it up a lil then shut it off after about 5 minutes of letting it run. So now I try and start it and it is still making that slow cranking noise...... I try starting it again and now cannot even get it to crank. Does anyone know my problem?? Do you think I could have somehow scratched the **** out of something and have that bad of luck that I messed something up trying to put in the bolt?? Sorry for the long read and thanks for the replies.

My sister's boyfriend believes that it is the starter...... we tried jump starting it and it still would not crank....... what are the probabilities of it being the starter??

slow cranking would indicate starter all right. oh, btw leaving a vc bolt out is really bad, that is a nice open hole for crawly things, dirt and crud to get down into your cams. Oil can spray out of there too.

Yeah I know...... I regret doing it but did not get the part until now... I checked to make sure that no oil sprayed out, and its a lil hole with the manifold sitting partially over it with part of the metal peice to hold up the manifold as well.

Also allows unmetered air into the crankcase causing a lean condition.

Already did check the battery and cables.... I'm going to push start it to my auto class and hopefully I can get this problem fixed.

Did you ever check the starter? If you had the car hooked up via jumper cables and it still turned over slowly then I'd really just change out the starter. I had a problem like this on an old blazer I had. One day(at home thank god) I went to start it up and heard a snap followed by a whirring. Starters are not hard to replace(at least they have not been in other cars I have owned).

Yea I will be replacing the starter today..... it wouldn't even crank when we tried to jump start it. Hopefully push starting it will go as planned and I will be able to get her running strong again.

Got the starter replaced and fires up real nice..... alot harder than I thought it would be, the bolts were on there pretty good and it took me and another student about an hour 1/2 to get it done.

I believe the valve cover bolts have a pilot end on them and it would hard not to connect with the threaded hole if angled in properly. I have found that you can maybe jam it between the cam or bearing cap..but will not seat the grommet proper or tighten if this was the deal. Why is a starter problem possibly a valve cover bolt?

Unmetered air in the crankcase??? The crankcase is under ventilated, a design flaw. One of several
