Took an 89 motor,MTX, and subframe out a car with 96k on it. My 93 mtx made to 217k still running stong, but the subframe cracked and fell off a bushing shrug . So I performed a full 60k on the 89's motor and replaced every seal, sensor, and gasket. New motor mounts, tranny mount, wires, motorcraft platinum plugs, catless Y pipe, and UD pulleys. I took the injectors, and wiring harness from the 93 and put them in the 89's heads so the harness' would connect corecctly. New clutch kit, resurfaced the flywheel, sandblasted and undercoated subframe then bolted it all together with energy bushings and put it in the 93'. I put dielectric in every harness connection, all new hoses, new battery cables, energy bushings, eibach springs on kyb struts all the way around. Oh and repainted the whole car :p . So i hopped in it tonight turned the key for the first time in five months and nothing but cranking over and over and over and the smell of
gas, hmmm. doh Checked for spark, got nothing but the coil pack itself was warm. Well thats all, any direction for me to go or any advice is greatly apreciated and sorry for the long post guys.

Manifold Ground Strap. Check that out.

Check your CPS connections.

Swap the '93 DIS for the '89 DIS (Can swap whole crossover tube) to make sure there isnt a wiring difference, etc.

FYI, the '89 DIS is unique to the '89 wink
I did not know that! Most likely where the problem lies then. Is it a wiring difference? Or is it a completely different module?

"Just from looking at the Motorcraft replacement part numbers, I believe that the 90-90 all use the same DIS module (DY-655). The 89 DIS module is a different number (DY-554).

Checking Shonut's site, this is corroborated.

Old DIS module 90-95 DY-655 F1SZ-12A297-B
Old DIS module 89 DY-554 E9DZ-12A297-B

naw Mickey, Im not saying your wrong...

The part numbers do show a difference. What difference... is unknown to me.

However, I have done some quick forum searching and it seems that people have used '89 DIS modules on other gen 1's as well as gen 2's.
But... I dont recall reading about anyone using a post '89 module on an '89.

So really, I do not know. shrug

I made a discovery this afternoon. The bottom of my coil pack was cracked with a white hard substance foaming out of it, eek! uh oh. Luckily i have another coil pack, but does anyone no of the four bolts that hold the pack to it's mounting bracket act as a ground for the pack, because the bracket is bolted into the motor i think of the top of my head. What i did was paint this bracket not knowing if it was intended to ground the coil, so i'm gonna clean it all up and try again and i'll let ya'll know if she runs. If anyone knows what would cause that pack to crack please let know, thanks a bunch guys and just wantedto say there are some very smart people on this forum thumb and thanks again.

FWIW, I swapped a 90 engine into an 89 last week. I used the 89's computer harness with the 90s engine harness and DIS (had to splice the 2 connectors) and the 89s computer and all works fine with the 90 DIS.

Not sure why it would crack. Make sure you have the plugs in the correct order. It is listed incorrectly in a few reference manuals. Or is it possible to install the pack backwards so it was 180* off (just a stab in the dark there)?

Ok I figured it out :D , I left the 89's coil pack in when i switched the motors. It just so happens the 93's MAF is keyed the same way as the 89' coil pack. So i had plugged the 93's maf harness onto the coil pack causing it to crack while i was cranking it hooked up incorrectly. And when i went to plug the 93's coil wire onto the 93's maf it wouldn,t reach. I thought i had just routed the harness wrong. This gets better. So i went and cut the coil harness out of the 89's wiring harness which like i said before is keyed the same as the 93's maf. So i lengthened the coil pack's harness' reach to connect to the maf. When i figured out what i did i put the 93's coil pack back in and dremmeled the key off the pack so that the coil wire harness i lengthened using the 89's would fit the 93's coil pack, then put the right harness on the maf and it sarted right up! But i probaply smoked the maf sensor just like the coil pack. I have the maf out of the 89 but from what i understand the progam in the computer is unique to each maf? If anyone has tried using another stock maf out of a genI car in a gen II please let me know how it worked out. Thanks again guys

All the MAF's should be interchangeable.

I figured it would be a power to the pack problem that would make the innerds trashed. That wrong plug is certainly a first though.
