Get under the car and check the sifter parts, like the linkage and the support rod, make sure thats not busted off the tranny. Then go from there.

Same thing happened to mine. Identical symptoms. Look at the trany ~ 6" to the left of where the drain plug is. Make sure all your bolts are there. One of mine fell out. Its happens to be the long bolt that holds the rev and 5th gear shaft aligned. I would bet $$ yours fell out too. I'll look for pics.

can you get it in gear no problem when the car is not running, or is this all the time? if it goes in no prob when the car is not running, then its either the clutch is worn out, or the clutch slave cylinder and its lines to the tranny

If you can find a pic of the tranny I can point it out to you. IIRC it is to the left and above the drain plug if you are looking at teh front of the trany from the front of the car.

no it dosent go in at all engine running or not. and the sho came with cable clutches not hydralic, or at least mine is. i want to convert it to hydralic bucause the clutch is so heavy. and no that is not the problem because it is a hi revs race clutch.

Check where the cable shifter mechanism attaches to the underside of the shifter that goes thru the floor. Also check where it attaches to the trans. Check the "drain plug", it's actually not a drain plug but the shift interlock bolt. If none of that is found to be broken or mal-aligned then it's probably something internal.

it is a rod shifter. the bolt that you are talking abou is the one that a 1/2 in ratchet goes into or am i think of something else. thanks bizzy

How is your shfit linkage? any play? the reason I ask is I lost reverse after my car went to the shop to have a clutch put in. when I got it back no reverse. I read informaiton on this site and others about cause of problem. After looking at the information and trying a few things, decided to tighten up the shift linkage, by info. obtain here (this web site). no more sloppy shifter and now I have reverse. Before mod. would not go into reverse car running or not. felt like something was blocking reverse.

not to much slop because it is a rod shifter. if that is what you have where did you tighten it.

Somewhere on this forum it tells you how to drill the shift rod linkage that connects to the imput shift shaft , put a bigger pin in it (1/2 bolt i believe) and use washers to take up the slack. did not seem like it made a lot of difference but it did and gave me reverse bck. will see if I can find thread.

here is the info.

Cure for a loose rod shifter...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Youll need a 10mm, 13mm, and 17mm wrench and support the front end on stands.

1) Remove the rod shifter linkage from the tranny with the 10mm.

2) Remove the support rod that attaches above the linkage with the 17mm.

3) Drop the rod shifter assembly from the support at the rear of the shifter. 13mm

4) Remove the shifter from the car and get to a suitable working area.

5) With a 4" grinder remove the factory rivets at the clevis.

6) Take center "bolt" to Home Depot and get a replacement bolt, locknut, and about 4 nylon washers.

7) Throughbolt the clevis and using the nylon washers take up the slack between the two clevis components.

8) I put a little grease on the bushings before tightening the nut down.

9) Reinstall into car in reverse order as removal.

Enjoy a gutentight rod shifter!
