Could fouling spark plugs cause the engine to backfire?
yes it could. they can also cause a "tick" noise in my experience. what do your plugs look like? a bad fuel injector can do the same. all the injectors i put in were clean and tested good tho.....

All your plugs are probably fouled now . Change them all out and then fire it up , if it's still misfiring and backfiring your timing is probably to blame . Double check your spark plug wires make sure you have them all routed correctly from the coil .

Not to hijack but someone elaborate on the timing of the "chains".... I know the cam gears have dots on them so you can line them up with the belt, but do the cam chains have to be installed a certain way? I didn't see any markings on them when I re-installed them on my 90.

I got the car running. Had wires 4 and 6 mixed up. I did a cylinder balance test and I received code 90(All cylinders contributing equally). I am still burning atf. I was so lucky to have not bent a rod or hydro lock the engine with that atf. I do not know what I was thinking at the time. I sucked all the atf out that I could. I still have an exhaust leak and where the y-pipe met the catback I had atf dripping out of there. So still so more work to do. The tranny vibrates when trying to go in reverse and sometimes in first gear. I installed a new OEM flywheel and CM1 Clutch. Hope all ends well.

I'm just curious how long the engine was sitting for this to happen, for future reference.

It must feel good to get that equal result from the test. I was reading the earlier post about using a fence post like no!!!!

Well it was a junk yard engine with 80k on the clock. All that was done to it was rod bearings, all new seals and gaskets, both top and lower 60k, and 3.0 cams were swapped in with adjusted valves. I don't know how long the engine sat in the junkyard without running, but who knows.

I am glad I got an equal test back. I don't know what I was thinking when I was trying to crank it with atf in it. That would explain the thunk of the starter as I was trying to crank. Pulled the plugs back out and sucked out the atf and turned her over by hand. Then she started. I hope I did not bend a rod or something.

One time with my subaru I got crazy and tried stalling the engine with seafoam at the end of the bottle. I almost shit my pants when I thought I hydrolocked the motor trying to restart it after the 15 min wait period. Thankfully I just pulled the plugs and turned the motor over to get the fluid out put the plugs back in and was fine.

Make sure that any ATF dripping near exhaust doesn't go up in flames .

Glad you got it going again , always double check the easy stuff :)

The motor in my car right now is a 90k jy spare that I bought from Kerry Tuck in 2004 . I hauled it home to my garage with plans but ended up putting it in a corner. Where it sat until early this year when I swapped it into the mocha after only changed the oil a few times. Did a 60k after driving it 2-3 months. Then boosted it . I did a compression check 2 weeks ago 170+ psi all around . So it sat for at least 7-8 years and is still running strong today after ALOT of abuse :)
