While trying to find my starting problems I've found that I can't pull any codes from the computer. The CE light doesn't light at all. Shouldn't it give me something? 94 ATX "green" 126K

eerily similar to what Beth had happen to her. Since it is an ATX and we have EGR, then I would check connections and such. Check all the connections to all the sensors including the DIS, and especially the egr's connections, I will look back into all of that later tonight, also good luck :thumb:

Nathan

EDIT: You are not getting a code because the CE light circuit has a break, or is open, whatever you want to call it. On Beth's it was because her VREF circuit was open/grounded.

Sorry, VREF I'm not sure what that is. The problem I've been having is random starting, I'm narrowing it down to a fuel pump issue. Since July, full 120K, water pump, all seals, valve cover gaskets, CPS, cam sensor, IAB, alternator, battery, belts, plugs, wires, etc, etc.. Runs great, won't start every other time, warm or cold, trying to check codes, nothing. Any idea's?

oh didn't think it would start at all
Does it turn over every time?, tell us a lil more. Did you check your connections? Check the DIS' ground.

Two weeks ago the alternator was replaced and I cleaned all the connections and wires all the way to the starter. Today I tried to pull the codes again and got nothing from the CE light, but when I removed the paper clip the motor bogged then a strange knocking sound came from the drivers side of the engine. I wiated 10 min and it started no problem, weird. BTW the tach is working.

A lot of times fuel system problems wont throw a code. It sounds similar to my starting problem which was resolved when I replaced the fuel pump. Do you hear any noises from the rear of the car? Also, does this non-start issue happen more when the engine is warm or cold?

Many times I will hear what I thought was gas moving around in the tank. I was told the tank had dividers of some sort to help with fuel delivery while cornering, so I didn't think much about it. Most often the problem happens when the motor is warm and is turned off for a short time, like 5 minutes in the grocery store. It happened last night, I cranked it 4 or 5 times with no result then I waited 2 or 3 minutes and it turned over like nothing ever happened. The tach seems to be working but there is no CEL. This morning I checked for codes but no luck.?.?. 94ATX 126K

Is the light bulb blown out for your CEL? Does it come on when you turn the key forward? (ACC position) If not, your CEL bulb might be blown out or possibly a fuse out.

For the no CEL symptom, SEARCH on keyword "CEL is MIA".

I discussed troubleshooting this issue awhile back.

Since you suspect a fuel delivery problem I assume you've checked the fuel pressure?

Also, if you can get it to start by holding the gas pedal to the floor (which cuts the injectors) it means you probably have a leaky injector, flooding the engine the first time you try to start it. After a few cranks it would start the second time, as there's not a bunch of excess fuel in the combustion chamber.

Let us know if you can think of anything else or if you can get some fuel pressure numbers.

Flooring it doesn't seem to change anything and all the injectors were cleaned during 120K. I'm going to try and check the bulb. Is there a way to check the codes without the CEL? 94ATX 126K
