The SHO V6's are non-interference engines, so even if belt breaks, valves should be fine.

Hold up: Why wont they put the valves through the pistons if the timeing belt breaks? So the only thing that would happen is the crank cancer?

A lot of cars are Interference engines, meaning that the valves protrude into the combustion chamber at rest, and that timing keeps them and the pistons apart...Belt breaks, valves meet piston, carnage ensues...LOL

Here's a better definition:

And welcome BTW!!

Thanks, so basically under no circumstance (in normal operation) will the piston and the valve meet?:hail:

GenIII's are different and you can get the valves to meet with the pistons on certain occasions (mostly during camshaft failure). They have timing chains rather than belts so the belt breaking thing isn't a huge concern.

There are lots of small things, but on any older car you're going to have some issues now and then.

Stupid question: How would a gen 2 sho compare to a 93 lumina with a 3.1 liter engine? :3gears:

Compare how? It's faster. The interior will be better. Not sure how they stack up with maintenance. You want a comparable GM then look at a GTP.

Look up the stats online and compare 0-60, 1/4, hp, torque, etc. Not that hard. I think you'll find very few Lumina enthusiasts around here to give first hand accounts.

Some but not all '91 SHO's were pluses and only in '91 so they are somewhat rare. The main diffs were a rear lip spoiler and a fiberglass power bulge hood.
