GenIII cams tend to work themselves out of their fitting and frag the valves. GenII&III can experience auto tranny failure. MTX cars can blow the differential pin and **** the tranny. There are common fixes for most stuff. You can weld the GenIII camshafts and the manual tranny diff for instance.

So when i'm looking through first and second gen SHOs (thats what I want, preferably the second), What should I look for? Like easy checks that would indicate a good sho with a careing driver?

With proper maintenance there shouldn't be a problem with these two things, but in the event maintenance was forgotten.
Rod bearings can be due from over-rev, never changing the oil, some also say plugged up cats. They call it the Yamahammer. I have a video.

Crank cancer, I think on the shotimes it explains it best. or someone else can chime in.

This video might explain some crank cancer, maybe not.

I just bought a 91 SHO Plus and it sounded just like that (first video) . I pulled the motor and took the oil pan off and sure enough it spun a bearing on the #1 cylinder. It looked to me like it hadn't be tooken care of lately so I would have to agree that "due from over-rev, never changing the oil" is a very good conclusion. If you take care of a SHO and don't abuse it (to often) lol theres no reason it shouldn't go for 250k. Just my 2cents

It seems over many years of posting around here that rod bearings should be done anywhere from 120-150k miles as a maintenance item. Do them again around 250k and you should be all set.

you don't need to change oil every 3k miles. but you do need to change the oil at least sometimes. I have known people personally who never even checked the oil, much less changed it. when their engine with no oil siezed up, they had no idea about "regular maintenance" and I've known other people who thought that since their engine used oil and they had to put a new quart in each week that they never needed to change the oil because "its getting changed all the time". needless to say, those are people that you do not want to buy a used car from.....

I think I get it?

Thanks for the help guys, I gotta do my homework before I shop around this summer, I did look at a few cheaper shos (like $800) and they had oil leaks. I have heard that that can be really really simple, or a pain in the ass, I was also told that if it's leaking from the top it's an easy fix, but if it's leaking from the bottom, you have to drop the tranny?

So basically crank cancer is when the camshafts timeing is not in time with the crank? So it busts the valves?

NP SHO: good source with lots of info :thankyou:

Oil seals--no you only have to drop the tranny if it's leaking at the rear main seal at the tranny. Oil leaks are a pain in the rear depending on the level of difficulty at accessing the area for seal replacement.

Look at engines, look at mating surfaces, moving parts, and seals and get a grasp of this kind of maintenance. No matter what type of vehicle you buy, if it's old enough, you will have leaks. Alot of us started learning about this sort of stuff by owning these cars.

Learn as you go. But you can't really get it unless you get under a hood and start monkeying around and bloody your knuckles, break stuff that wasn't broken when you started, and cuss up a storm.

The SHO V6's are non-interference engines, so even if belt breaks, valves should be fine.
