Hey guys, my name is Craig, and I have a 93 Tarus SHO that I've had for about 6 months. Recently, the bolt on my timing belt adjuster broke off while I was on the freeway causing the timing to get off on both cams. I've been searching around a bit, and I was hoping someone would have some info on setting the cam timing.
Thanks in advance.
Craig

Thanks, but both cams are out of time with each other

First picture is left cam gear (firewall side). Second is right cam gear position (grill side)2f36c8d6abe2280ab629a237c9b7bf1f67d359bba781269d727f8ade24599ac5

That is normal for your situation. You literally put a strap wrench on the cam sprocket and turn the cam until the mark on the sprocket lines up with the line on the metal part of the timing cover. One is easy, because it is at an orientation where it has the valves closed, but the other will be tricky to keep in the right place because it has one set of valves all the way open, so it will want to snap one way or the other from the correct location.

There are plenty of threads on this forum about how to set the timing, so just read carefully and pay attention to details and you will be fine.

Right?! Second time I've had a timing belt go on a car with a non-interference engine. 1st time was a 92 ****** GT at the entrance to DFW airport lol.

The rear timing cover has all of the index marks on it. Line the cams up to the ones on the top and the lower timing belt pulley to the one on the bottom. The link that luigisho put up shows the pictures of where the marks are.

If you are having trouble getting the lower pulley to line up put the crank pulley on and turn it. I have also removed the spark plugs before so that there is little to no resistance from the cylinders.

You lined up the three different belt points on the diagram? It's possible to install the belt backwards and not have the oil pump mark line up with crank shaft pulley mark and the line on the belt. Engine will spin, but not start.

Yeah, I lined up all three. Engine spins, and I've got spark at the coil, but no start. Pretty sure my crank position sensor was on it's way out before I had the timing issues, and messing around in there probably hasn't helped, would a bad CPS give me a no start?

Check your grounds at the intake manifold. The crossover tube that has the DIS mounted to it is held in place by 2 12mm bolts. Those bolts are grounds for the DIS. You removed that tube to get to the cam sprockets. Double check those bolts. I've had a no start condition after doing a timing belt and I swapped those 2 bolt from one to the other and the car cranked right up afterwards.
