Well, here I am, the fella that knocks the rebuilt water pumps. It really does not matter where you buy one of those, the rebuilder is probably Cardone. As for how good they are, take a look where the shaft protrudes through the case and you will see that Cardone damages the case when they remove the old bearing. The Cardone WP I installed lasted about 1500 miles before it started leaking through its main seal. IMHO, the only reason to install a Cardone WP is price. The reason I advise against taking this chance is the amount of labor and trouble involved in changing a SHO WP. There are few worse jobs on the SHO than the WP. If your rebuilt pump does turn out to be a lemon, it means you get to completely redo the entire front 60K over again to get to that WP., there is no shortcut. The fact that Cardone will give you a replacement part (shipping on your $ BTW) is little consolation when it's the labor and the possibility of it leaving you stranded that is the issue. If you are having a shop do your 60K, and they will give you a 90 day guarantee on the parts and labor, then it's probably not as big of an issue. But when your own labor and trouble is on the line, do you want to take the chance?
It is my opinion that the brand new Duralast WP from Autozone for $165 including shipping is the better buy. This water pump is made in Japan by Aisan, and it appears to be identical to the OEM Ford WP in every respect, right down to the fasteners used. Unlike the rebuilt Cardone, you do not have to reuse your old housing. It is complete including a brand new housing and even a brand new pulley. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. BTW, this same pump is sold through other outlets, easy to identify bc it's the one that comes with a new pulley on it. Unless price is an overriding concern, why not take advantage of these all new parts while they are available in the marketplace? As others have posted, I do recommend using the Felpro WP gasket kit o-rings rather than the ones that come with the pump.
Cardone chips the WP case when the bearing is removed. I looked at three of them and they were all that way. Terrible error?...probably not, but it demonstrates these are not the same as a new pump.
