My name is Marc and my wife and I picked up a 2013 used SHO non PP 113,000 miles with a check engine light coming up on the drive home. So far I have had the p0016 code, (the only code) which so far the fix was to replace the camshaft position sensor which I did last night. Other than that the engine is making a consistent ticking noise at hot idle that I believe to be lifters or the dreaded cam phasers, or just a loud fuel pump but I am unsure. Other than that the only other thing I need to do is change the PTU fluid, and possibly replace the oil feed line to the rear turbo as I have a decent sized leak coming from the rear turbo. Any help at all with that project would be appreciated and advice on the ticking noise.

Hi Marc. The fuel pump (HPFP) on the 3.5 is notoriously loud. Remove the engine cover and then the foam cover on the HPFP and see if you can isolate the sound. I don't believe the phasers will make the noise you describe (they announce themselves on start-up). Oil from the rear turbo might be from the turbo itself (leaking at the air inlet connection; common). If so, tighten the connection and decide how you want to proceed (no urgency). Either way, get your eyes on the oil leak before you buy any parts.

Yeah I did take all the covers off when I did the camshaft position sensor (not in a fun place) and the noise almost seems to be emanating from the left side of the engine on the front side (bank 2). The car idles and drives super smooth and sometimes has a slight hiccup going from 1st to 2nd so that’s why I’m thinking I need to change the PTU fluid asap before it’s too late.

That's the location of the HPFP. PTU fluid will not cause shifting hiccups (no shifting occurs within the PTU) but do change the fluid to prevent catastrophic failures.

Ok thanks for all the advice, I might record a clip of the noise with the cover off and post it here to get some concrete analysis just to make sure I didn’t buy someone else’s problems.

Has the water pump been changed recently? I ask because when I had mine done they failed to replace the timing chain and tensioners. I noticed a ticking noise that was getting progressively louder. When I brought it in, the timing chain got so loose that it jumped timing and had to have my head replaced along with other parts that were part of the damage.

Be sure and add fluid changes to the RDU as well as the transmission. You might be surprised at what comes out of the PTU or rather what does NOT come out of the PTU.

Let's hope at that mileage the PTU fluid has been changed before? When I did my first PTU fluid change I had black slimy paste. After 3 fluid changes I now have nice honey colored fluid when I pump it out.

Thanks to this forum that was at 27K miles and we have just recently broke the 100K mark with the original PTU.

Fluid changes were the key for my car!
