hey guys..... just scoped up my first FORD. . . 93' green on blk Atx SHO. . . 123k.... got it for $325 =) :finger: now..... reason it was so cheap guy told me the trans will not shift out of 1st but sometimes it will shift fine. (although in the 5-7 miles ive driven it so far it hasnt shifted) It runs fine, it has reverse, nuetral and it drives fine in 1st... it just doesnt wanna upshift.

Now being i only paid $325 i wont be totally dissapointed if it does need a tranny... but i was crossing my fingers it was a cheaper fix such as a solenoid, or somethin fluid related, computer issue etc.... now im new with these cars so i dont know much at all... i havent gotten into the tranny yet at all besides checkin the fluid so far, level seems good and color was a dark redish color.... let the games begin. :thumb:

I have done through the same problem with my ATX. Most common on the 93's for some reason. But you are going to have to replace the tranny.

If you want to try a couple things first, try flushing the fluid and changing the tranny fluid. You can do it at home in the garage for about $50. Napa carries the tranny change kit (filter and gasket) for about $20-25, then you just need fluid. Do a search on tranny flush and you will find all the tips and tricks for doing the job.

Good Luck, Jason

the tranny is a weak spot on the SHO, especially in the 93, after you get it rebuilt i wouldd change the computer out (forgot the name of it), good luck and welcome to the forum

Check the servos, sometimes the c-clips break and the tranny will not shift. This is especially common with the overdrive servo. Word of caution - the servo covers need to removed/installed evenly or you will break the cover.

PS - you will not loose much fluid.

Flushing out the transmission can help with preventive maintenance but isnt going to help a driveability issue. You should pull your codes (its free). What youll be looking for is some transmission related codes. My 93 atx has had a few tranny related issues but I was able to pull the codes and fix the problems for less than 100.00, it has 139,000 miles on it and is showing no signs of needing a rebuild yet. In my case the VSS and TSS needed to be replaced which is pretty common and will raise **** with shift patterns, and the codes were stored. Since you just got the car and dont seem to know the history of it, it would be hard to tell just from your description if its just a bad sensor or your tranny needs a overhaul. Pulling the codes will also help dianose any other neglected problems the previous owner most likely ignored. Learning the procedure is mandatory to owning a sho and being a cheap b*****d not to mention getting free and helpful advice on this forum.

Even if the VSS and TSS fail, the computer will still shift the tranny. It'll be early and hard, but it'll still shift in a FEMM (Failure Effects Management Mode) or Limp Home mode.

If the tranny won't shift into 2nd, it's most likely a broke planetary input shaft on the front planet. When it does this, it usually tears up a bushing and a needle bearing in the process. Best thing to do is get a new tranny. I'd offer you one of our remanufactured units, but at $2200 it's proll'y outta your price range...being a cheap Bass-tard and all. However, if you decide to stop screwin' around and only want to do it once, get one of our units. They shift great and last a long time.

BTW, don't bother fooling with getting a new computer, both the H3Z and D4U1 ATX computer programs work the same.

Welcome to the list.

Or ditch the ATX and and pick up a MTX. At a 325.00 loss count yourself lucky and a lesson learned. I've had both and not only do the MTX's prove to be more reliable, they are faster, corner better, and have more room to work on (not to mention install :) )things in the engine bay. If you shop around you can find a decent one for less than half the price of a transmission rebuild. Unfortunately I moved and had to get rid of one of mine, and I was offered more than I paid for the MTX. Now I'm stuck with the ATX, God help me.

If you go down that last road I would be willing to give you the $325 you invested in the first place. I could use another 93 for parts and cores and eventually rebuild both. Like before you are not in bed with cheap woman, she will take you down the path and then leave you. Broke and broken hearted.

Good luck,
Jason

Shoot me a PM if you decide to bail.

It needs ot be replaced, no question in my brain. I'd say a rebuild woudl cost about $2,150 (that's what mine cost)
