Is there an aftermarket replacement? Is this really necessary? Is it weight sensitive? While replacing a rear Ebrake cable today my mechanic noticed that the rear wheels still rotate with the brake pedal fully depressed. He believes it's the proportioning valve not working or only partially working. Any ideas on this?

Yes it is weight sensitive. Was your car on a drive on rack or were the wheels hanging loose? Also the hoses are notorious for swelling inside and not letting flow through. HTH.

As a mater of fact, yes. The whole car was in the air on 4 jackstands. I'm guessing if it was down as normal the rear calipers would grip tighter? It seems to drive (+ brake) fine.

By the looks of the rust on the valve actuator, I'd say the rubber lines have rusted where it the mounts to the strut restricting the hose. This problem can make the brakes drag because you push the fluid in the caliper under pressure and the fluid is restricted/trapped on return holding pressure on the caliper piston/pads.

FWIW, Mine looked alot like that, probably worse, and was causing no problems. I replaced it thinking it was, and nothing changed. Plus it was a $100 part from the Ford dealer. I called AutoZone and they said that they did not sell them.

To clarify..

If the left rear wheel's suspension is hanging freely, the valve will cut off fluid flow to BOTH rear wheels.

You have to load the suspension or otherwise manually actuate the valve in order to get fluid to flow. Once it is opened, you can test for hose or caliper issues or can bleed the rear brakes.

The caliper slide pins/rack need to function before any rear braking can be expected. Penn. is a rusty state huh? These rear brakes suck, yes they do.
