If the bucket pops up, just set it back down. You should always turn the motor a few times and recheck the shims before putting it all together.

As far as the test, I would not worry about it.

What I was trying to ask is what if the shim is removed and the bucket holder comes back to the up position (if the holder pops out). Then you have the bucket back up without a shim for the tool to contact in order to compress it so that the holder can be replaced. Will the depressor tool contact the edges of the empty bucket or what?

I haven't done this yet, and it might be obvious but I just wanted to be prepared.

Yes, it will. Worst case, use the edge of the bucket (under the camshaft off to the side, not in front of it) to compress.
